Well, I will be getting my tax back soon, and for once I thought I'd go out and buy some good shit for myself. I bought a new computer in December, but now I want to buy a PS3, I've had a PS and PS2 before but for those who have played/own a PS3 (ie Lucy tongue.gif) what are your thoughts on the console and graphics? I've only seen videos of the PS3, but not the actual thing in real life.
{Bunny}
Haha, this thread has my name all over it!

I think it's freaking awesome!! I was blown away by the graphics.

The console itself is larger, and some don't like the look of it. But I don't think it looks that bad. It's pretty stylish and modernised.

The games for PS3 take longer to come out at the moment because they have more work to do on the graphics, and the games contain more stuff.

Currently there's 33 games out, which is good for how long the actual console has been out. As far as that can go, all I can say is HIRE FIRST!

There's alot of good deals out there as far as price and value goes. When they first came out alot of places sold out of games and controllers real quick. But everything should be up to stock now.

Speaking of controllers, they're wireless or not wireless, whatever you chose. Which is awesome. You can play from wherever you like laugh.gif

We can shoot people from OUTSIDE the house thumbsupsmiley.png

And Rob, you can always come around and play on ours biggrin.gif I'm always home. And Ace always hires games on the weekend. He's hiring some Ninja game that he fell in love with, and the new Transformers and probably Darkness this weekend. Would be great to see you winksmiley02.gif

You reallt have to see it to beleive winksmiley02.gif

I played one at Toys'R'Us just the other day. The graphics are pretty frickin awesome. But the game i was playing was boring as hell. But yeah, im a big PS/Sega kid and with sega gone - PS it is!
{Bunny}
What game was it?
Gabtron
I'm a Nintendo girl myself. Go the Wii tongue.gif

{Bunny}
The Wii looks interesting. I'd rather play one at Big W or Target or something before I think about buying one though.

Ace wants one, but then again he has just about every game console there is laugh.gif

He likes the interactivity of the Wii.

Yeah it looks very tempting to buy tongue.gif Oh as I said in PM Lucy, I will be taking you up on that offer winksmiley02.gif

What games does Ace have? That Formula One game looks good.

I'm keen on NASCAR games, apparently 1 is coming out in 09 lol. The graphics look pretty insane though
{Bunny}
We own Sonic and Resistance.

Resistance is a shoot em' up game.

Sonic is pretty hard laugh.gif It's meant to be MY game, and I can't even get past the first level.

The Formula One game was pretty good.

Out of all the games that are out Ace has hired pretty much all of them. So he'd be the one to talk to laugh.gif I just sit there and watch. He doesn't like buying the games in case he doesn't like them. But the problem is that when he hires them for 2 days he usually ends up finishing them laugh.gif

I can't wait to see what the Transformers game looks like this weekend. The movie was rad I hope the game is just as good!

Yes, come over and play games with meeeeeeee biggrin.gif

Actually correct me on that Nascar game, it's meant to come out this year

VERY tempted...

{Bunny}
Well, just let me kno when you're coming up and we'll hire some car like games so you can see kind of what the NASCAR would be like, though it will probably be better.

I think Ace is looking forward to that coming out too? huh.gif I don't kno, I don't pay alot of attention laugh.gif

The game i played was some unrealistic off road 4x4 racing game. Fun for a few seconds, then its just boring.
Gabtron
The Wii is fun for about half an hour and then I get over it. Haven't played it for awhile but every time someone notices it for the first time they ask to play it, lol.

Looks awesome cuz we've got a 43inch plasma which is wall mounted. This is problematic with the Wii in that plasma's have a short time delay making games like Wii Sports a little trickier.

G.
Konstantine
I was a big fan of the PS2. Wouldn't mind getting my hand on a PS3, but I think I'll wait a year for the price to drop. I'm getting a new PC in a few days anyway, so I'll be laughing as far as gaming goes.

Hmm...

*Wonders if having a projector would portray the same problems*

I cannot stand time delays laugh.gif

Another thing with the PS3 is that some games you don't use say the analog stick or the D pad, you actually have to use the controller to control yourself. It's pretty entertaining. And is also a feature you can turn on and off if you don't like it.

To get the full capabilities out of the PS3, I'd recommend you getting a 1080P television as well. We have a good set-up here at home with the difference being that we get all our games from Asia. All the games from Japan are region free, much cheaper and easier to understand if you dont buy RPG's. The graphics output is superb on a 1080P resolution TV but not only is gameplay excellent, so is the BD quality.

I'm waiting for my brother to buy me Wangan Midnight for us. If you like Jap drifting, this is the game to get. Otherwise there's Kaido Racer for PS2.

Dude...just get the PS3. It shits allover the xbox360 in terms of quality and dual usage...meaning you dont have to fork out extra to watch HD-DVD's. There arent that many BD movies out there yet but to have something like a games console and a Blu-Ray player in one sleek machine is a pretty good deal...considering a stand-alone Blu-Ray player costs upwards of $1200 for a decent machine. Only crappy thing is the Sony online thing. We dont have it connected here yet but I was told it's pretty crappy.

I was talking to a guy at EB Games and he said Sony have shot themselves in the foot.

First the PSP was a big flop, and sales for the PS3 have been way down.

Nintendo are owning this s**t right now!! Which is good for me as I have a DS & Wii biggrin.gif

Was going to get a PS3 in the next two weeks but after talking to this guy and hearing feedback from heaps of people/geeks about it I no longer want one.

I love my Wii!! Just got some extra controllers and Mario Party for it!! Also Resident Evil is freakin' awesome!!

Only reason why I want the PS3 now is for GTA!!

I've always been a Nintendo girl aswell, I have a PSP but they are expected to go off the market by December, I'm selling mine on EBay as we speak hehe.

Nintendo FTW!!

Just because people SAY it's a big flop doesn't mean that people don't like them and that some stores didn't sell out of PS3's and their accessories within a day (which some did). Sony have dug themselves a hole because the PS3 includes Blue Ray stuff, which makes it a hell of alot cheaper just to buy a PS3 than a Blue Ray DVD player.

One of the XBox's was also a big flop, people still bought them and people still like them.

In saying that though, I'm pretty sure we're convinced to get a Wii. They just look so fun! The PS3 and the Wii are nothing like eachother. The Wii is alot more interactive which is great. But the PS3 has awesome graphics. Just gonna wait for the Wii's price to go down a bit I reckon.

I love our PS3, always will. Every game console that's been out has been different in one way or another, and that's what you have to look at, people like them for different reasons.

the wii is aimed at a different market.. at the non gamers. i know a few mates that bought a wii for a laugh and havent really used it for months now.. they dont care about graphics and sound and actually having a decent game, they are too pre occupied with smashing furniture and stuff while waving their arms about like an octopus on heat

the ps3 is a step forward from everything we have here.

the xbox 360 based itself on HD-DVD technology which has failed, blu ray is the way forward... the ps3 is jsut ahead of its time. yes its expensive, and yes they launched it at the wrong time, but the ONLY competition (xbox 360) doesn't even support HDMI output.... sooooooooo when u go looking for the best connection between your 3rd gen console and your hi def tv.. xbox wont have it.

and please... wii is not a serious game console, yeah its fun waving a sword in zelda, nd the first 5 times you play wii sports its fun.. but its oputselling everything cos its cheap

not because its quality

wait til this time next year after HDTV prices have dropped again, and see who's starting to move units.

the ps3 is an amazing machine that supports the new generation of disc format, and ships STANDARD in oz with a 60Gb hard drive.

and with games like littel big planet allowing people to create their own levels and distribute them online to other users, XBOX live is running out of excuses to say its better online. the playstation network is FREE to play online... not ridiculously expensive like the microsoft version.

once all teh bugs are ironed out and programmers start to unlock the potential of the ps3, people will stop bagging it and realise that its the future.
{Bunny}
Totally agree with you there March E

Only reason we want a Wii is for the fun of the gaming, nothing else. Just something different.
march E
and before anyopne starts with the whole "gears of war on xbox looks better than anything on playstation" argument, tis because they were the first to use streaming textures and normal mapping systems. this is incredibly memory intensive, so imagine what a ps3 developer can do with twice the disc space..
texture streaming is taking off.

however i do want to play halo 3, its gonna be damn intense

Haha, which is the only reason we want to get one.

I can't justify spending $1,000 on a PS3.

It has one game out at the moment that appeals to me, and the only other game coming out that I really want is GTA. They definitely launched it at the wrong time.

As if the Wii isn't a serious console? They were sold out in a matter of months Worldwide. Pfft and saying it's for "non gamers" .. I'm a big BIG gamer/geek/nerd and I wanted one straight away. Resident Evil & Zelda are awesome games!! And the fact I can play Zelda Oot, MM & WW on the Wii made it more appealing to me (big Zelda fan here laugh.gif)

I think the graphics on the PS3 are amazing but yeah .. I will wait till it comes down in price before I purchase one. Not spending $1,000 on something when I already have a Nintendo 64, DS Lite, Wii, PS2 & PSP. Would be a total waste of money for me.

Anyway to me your either a Nintendo fan, Xbox fan or Sony fan. I have always loved Nintendo and Sony but yeah not spending that much on a PS3, I shall wait (which mind you will be a looooong wait) till it comes down in price.

Interesting article here smile.gif (remind you this is taken from America hence why the price tag is different)

Why the PS3 Will Flop

It seems that critics tend to claim the PS3 will win, but the sad truth is that most of these people forgot one thing in 11th grade English. Oh, its a little something called ELABORATION! Yes, in the end these so called "professionals" have the writing skills of a chimpanzee, so I've decided to set them straight. I'm going to tell them how a mighty Juggernaut is destroying its self and possibly bankrupt a multi million dollar company. I going to tell you why there PS3 will flop.

1)The Price: I'm probably beating a dead horse here, but Sony's major flaw is the •••• $600 price tag. Of course, Sony tries to tell you its worth it, but is it really. Truth is, its hard to sell your system if no one can afford it. A normal entertainment budget can range from $50-$100 depending on the income. Basically you will have to save up for about six weeks just to be able to get a new system. Also the average person doesn't just play video games, they have other things to spend there money on as well. Also add in the fact that you still have to buy a game and a controller, which is another $100. Sony is pushing there system to hardcore gamers and the usual demographic of 18-28 year olds, but if your a young adult do you have $600 to spend on a console, but you might have $400 to buy that cheaper 360.

2)Stiff Competition: With the PS2, its was total domination. Nintendo and Microsoft didn't have a chance in hell, but now its a little different. Nintendo and Microsoft have already come out and have received alot of praise. And Sony, well, not so much. Microsoft and Nintendo have shown alot more promise and have both had strong launches(or will in Nintendo's case). They also aren't a year Behind. Sony didn't factor that in, as they are not doing well to protect there title.

3)Few Strong Launch Titles: It is somewhat surprising how many launch titles Sony has, yet they are lacking in both quantity and quality compared to there competition. Sony has about twenty or so titles, which is good, but Nintendo has thirty and Microsoft more, as they have been out longer. This doesn't help the consumer, as there not much to chose from. The quality is also poor. None of the titles stick out, besides Devil May Cry 4. Nintendo has Zelda, and Red Steel, where Microsoft has Oblivion and Gears of War. There competitors have much better games, and it only gets worse from there

4)Few Strong Titles: Sony also doesn't have the backing in the long run. Sadly, they have only Metal Gear Solid 4, set late 2007 and Final Fantasy XIII which may not be seen till 2008! Nintendo has Mario Galaxy set around spring, Metroid Prime 3 early next year and Super Smash Bros Brawl some time in 2007. Microsoft also has a full hand with Lost Planet early 2007, and Halo 3 and Halo Wars sometime in 2007. Now Sony's hand looks like a fold, especially since Grand theft Auto, there ace for the west, is also on the cheaper X-Box 360. Opps! And if thats not bad enough, they keep on losing exclusive titles to Microsoft.

5)Few Systems: Sony has announced they will have 400,000 consoles for the US launch. That's nice and all, but Nintendo has one million and Microsoft more. So what does this mean. On Christmas a buyer will go to the store to pick a PS3 but they will have none. Its Christmas, so they don't want to go empty handed, so they'll easily pick up their competitors. This also means more people will tell friends and family about that new console they picked up instead of the PS3. This will also have some other effects as well.

6)Sony Can't Keep Up: Its expensive to make a PS3. This is a major reason why they don't have many at launch, but they could lose solely because of this. Even if there is a demand, they wont be able to keep up production. This could mean unhappy fans who will just pick up another system, so even after launch you see something like in #5.And even if fans like it more and could potentially sell more, it wont because there competitors make theres faster, and cheaper

7)Developers Pull Out: Developers only support a system if they make money, but they might not be able to because of shortage. A developer makes a game at launch. Theres only about 1million consoles at launch, so at most they could only sell one million, and thats if it does well world wide AND everyone buys one, which is almost impossible. Well because of these shortages, developers might not sell that many units, and a game only has a shelf life for so long, so no one can buy your games, because Sony cant supply the systems. Developers spend alot of time and money on a hard to develop PS3 game, and they aren't getting there money's worth, so they'll easily support the enemy.

8)To Hard To Develop For: It takes alot of time and money to produce a PS3 game. Sony claimed those cells processors are worth it, but it may be a downfall. The games require ALOT more time to make and more money. This is
bad for both sides. Sony wont have enough games on there console compared to there competitors and developers aren't making as much money. So easily developers and fans will leave.

9)Bad E3 Showing: E3 is(or was) the major event for the gaming world. This can make or brake a year, as this is where the press make there decisions. So how did Sony fair. Well they managed to do worse the an F, they got a Z. The event was very dry, they fumbled alot, said some dumb things, and basically left the audience is shock(not good shock like Nintendo's event) with the "599 US dollars". Well, what is the end result? Nintendo is now loved by the media where Sony is constantly laughed with "Giant enemy crab" and "RIIIIIDGE RACER". So how do the fans feel?

10)Fans Aren't Happy: Its hard to find someone who wants a PS3. As mentioned earlier, there are two demographics: hardcore gamers and young adults. Well, we know the young adults can't afford it, but what about the hardcore gamers. Well, there in lies the problem, they don't want it. If you look at most polls, the PS3 usually has a high percent of "No"s, about 40%+ at least with still a high percent that say "Don't Know", about 20%+. Some polls may even go as high as 50% or even 60% "No". Include "Don't Know" and you have a small percent of "Yes"s. In fact, Gamespy said that the average Household will have a Wii and a PS3. There also a site called Wii60.com that makes fun of Sony. Also, wasn't there this lawsuit that mad a company bankrupt. God, I wish I could remember it.

11)Putting Lik-San.com Out Of Business: If people didn't hate Sony, know they do. Thanks to Sony, Lik-San.com is dead, and no one is happy. You can go to the site and find many a post hoping for Sony's demise. The truth is large sums of people used Lik-San.com, and now Sony closed it. There could have been million of users, that now cant import because of Sony, and guess what, they probably would have bought a PS3. Basically they've lost almost all sales in Europe the as lawsuit was in there home town; this making it more likely for them not to buy it as more of them are affected. It may be a victory in court, but Lik-San.com will get it's revenge.

12)Sony's Defeat in the Handheld Market: The PSP losing to the DS proved to the world that Sony is not invincible, and it may also help defeat the PS3. We will probably see many parallels to the two systems. The fact that many people have a DS vs a PSP is a large factor that will help them in buying a new system. Especially in Japan, where the DS dominates. Simply put, Nintendo sells an astronomic number of DSs in Japan, and those people are more prone to buy a Wii rather then a PS3, since they are happy with the DS and are more likely to buy the product of the same company. You probably do it all the time with software, buying from Nintendo cause they make good games. Basically most fans are losing there faith in Sony. The PSP lower sales are making people turn to
other consoles, because they just don't have the software(why is that familiar?).

13)Blu-ray: The Blu-ray is the PS3's make or brake, and as you know, its brake. In this day in age, there are alot of alternatives to watching movies. Many people have begun to watch movies on a computer and iPod. So what about Blu-Ray. Sadly, for Sony, DVDs are still popular. Alot of people have DVD players, maybe even two or three, why would they want to change to Blu-Ray? Well what made DVDs in Japan was "The Matrix", but this year, the movie industry has been at a stand still. There just aren't that many movies, and none that will make someone buy a Blu-Ray player. The other thing is not everyone is making Blu-Rays. Sony will, but everyone will stick to DVDs and of course Blu-Ray is up against HD DVDs which can cut more sales. This is also major parallel to the PSP. Movie developers aren't making money off of UMD. It use to be that there also a UMD for a DVD, but now they're all done and gone, and it will be the same for the PS3.

14)Overheating: When the PS3 was at the Tokyo Game Show, one major thing happened to it, they overheated. Now, keep in mind that the Tokyo Game Show(or TGS) runs around the normal day, probably around 9am-5pm, which is similar to E3. Well, many PS3s were overheating. Theres were also real PS3, not development kits like for the Wii. If you remember the X-Box 360's launch this was major, and this will shurly put a damper in Sony's parade' expecally since it has happed before. They will get bad press and no one will have enough faith to purchase one.

15)The Commercial:Oh God the commercial. Now Sony is usually good at advertising but this is just out of place. If you haven't seen it, it has a baby in the room with a PS3. The baby says some weird stuff and begins to cry with the gameplay in it's eye. It PS3 floats up and says "Play Beyond" under it. Now this may seem "hip" and "unique" but to all those who've seen it its "confusing" and "creepy". It's defiantly not going to appeal to the masses. They'll simply say "what the hell is this?" not knowing what it is, and forget it. The saddest part is at the end of the commercial it says the launch date (Nov 17). It should come up as 11/17 however in the commercial it comes up as "/////7". The ones are too similar to the slashes and the only number you see is "7". Now a friend of mine saw it and said he didn't know what it was at first but then found out it was the launch date; however, he thought it was Nov. 7. Now someone seeing this may not be that quick; the date only appears for a second and unless they actually know what this is it hard to tell what those slashes are. It may come down to the fact that now was able to tell what this was and if they did when it comes out.

Conclusion: The major point against these are always name recognition, but it will take more then that to saw fans. In the long run, most buyers don't care. They mainly think about playing Madden. In fact they'll care more about the price for there Madden box. Most fans don't care to much of who made the system. This is evident as the DS, which didn't even carry the Gameboy name, beat the PSP, who had the ultimate Sony name.

Now how will this bankrupt a company? Well, Sony develops system is a reverse profit was. Nintendo makes consoles where you pay more then they made it for, for instance you'll pay $250 for a Wii, but they made it for $200. Sony and Microsoft and Sony do this in reverse where they make it for more then you pay for. The idea is that development cost go down fast and then you make a profit, but in the long ruin have the stronger system. So you pay $600, but they pay about $700. So if Sony doesn't sell one console they loss $100, two they lose $200, for 5 they lose $500, but for one thousand they lose $100,000. This isn't much but they must also pay employees and other things to keep this running,
and if this number get higher they can be in hot water.

Also Sony isn't as hot as it use to be. There mighty MP3 players where beaten by Macintosh's iPod. There PC were beaten by newcomers Gateway and Dell, and TVs by everyone. In fact these companies are relatively unknown before this.
In fact Macintosh was virtually nothing. So there companies who had little name recognition beat one that had plenty of it. Now, Video games are there market and if they lose too much money there, they might be sunk.

Basically, this is Sony's last console run. The PS3 is too expensive to maintain and it will just get brushed to the side by more affordable consoles. This race will mostly be between Microsoft and Nintendo with Sony drying up as a whole in three to four years. Well, so long to bad rubbish.

okay here's an article written by Insomniac Games Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings (not some 5 year old wii fanboy)

Mar 27, 2007 : 10 Reasons Why PS3 Will Win This Console Generation

Insomniac Games Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings discusses why the PS3 is the console to beat

First of all, let me make it clear that Insomniac is a 100% independent development studio. Sony has neither endorsed nor authorized what I’m writing here.

When I started this blog post I was planning to write about Home and Little Big Planet from a developer’s perspective. But as I read some of the media and message board responses to Sony’s GDC presentation, I wanted to address an ongoing industry phenomenon. Specifically, the sheer volume of negative spin toward Sony from both the mainstream press and the internet community. Mere minutes after Sony announced a beautiful, ground breaking, free, community-enhancing online PS3 service, 100 internet posters were trying to argue that this was somehow a bad thing. Whether you love or hate Sony, if you’re trying to spin Home as a bad thing I can only conclude that you’re part of Microsoft’s $3.2 billion viral marketing campaign.

I’ll be the first to say that Sony has had a very rough road from last E3 up through this year’s GDC. Some of their wounds have been self-inflicted, but they’ve also had to face a conspicuously hostile media. Take the New York Times article “How the PS3 will kill your dog, steal your girlfriend, and infect you with Ebola.” And Time magazine’s piece “Global Warming: Is It The PS3?” And more recently, GameSpot’s “Ten Complaints We Thought Up While Everyone Else Was Watching Little Big Planet.”

For the last nine months it has been fashionable to bash the PS3. At first it was controversial, even titillating, to make sensational and dire predictions about the PS3’s future. You could watch it happen again and again – a rumor starts on a message board (“The PS3s all caught on fire at TGS!”, “Blu-Ray won’t have any Porn!”), then it gets picked up by a games industry website, and a few days later USA Today runs the story with the headline “Experts Say PS3 Doom3d!1!!” But the tide has changed so much now that it’s downright controversial to suggest that the PS3 may yet be a success. So, in the spirit of sensationalism and controversy, let me present to you 10 reasons why the PS3 will be the console market leader by 2010:

1. Home & Little Big Planet
One of my jobs at Insomniac is to try to come up with “the next big thing.” This is something everyone at Insomniac does, but as Chief Creative Officer it’s also part of my job description. For the last two years there have been two concepts that I have felt had the strongest potential to be the next big thing. At GDC, Sony came out of the blue and delivered fully-realized versions of both concepts.

The first concept is a realization of the ‘Metaverse’ from Neal Stephenson’s groundbreaking novel Snow Crash. For those who haven’t read it, it’s what inspired Second Life. Over the last couple years, many of us at Insomniac have come up with lots of different ideas on how to make such a system for consoles. So when Home came out, already nearly complete and looking beautiful, it was both amazing and humbling at the same time. In short, Home is exactly what the online console community needs. I’m not saying that because it’s on the PS3. I’m saying that because Home is a fully realized version of something I’ve been trying to figure out how to do for two years.

The other “next big thing” I had been thinking about is how to make a game that is primarily driven by player-generated content. So when Little Big Planet was announced I felt like Orville Wright tinkering on a bicycle-powered balsa wood plane as a learjet suddenly flew overhead. Not only does Little Big Planet have stunningly beautiful graphics, gorgeous animation, brilliant physics and intuitive controls, it’s also a cooperative four player online game! This alone makes it accessible to a much greater audience than player vs player games. And most important of all, it has an absolutely ingenuous system for creating and sharing your own levels. This is HUGE. This is something that’s never been done on consoles and now it’s being introduced not as a half-baked add-on to another game, but as an absolutely brilliant, fully realized, breathtaking experience. You can bet that dozens of developers will create their own Little Big Planet levels as soon as it comes out. Many future game designers will get their start by designing Little Big Planet levels. Gamers who previously had no way to get their foot in the door as a game designer will have developers calling them in the middle of the night if they make a top-rated LBP level. I say again, Little Big Planet is HUGE.

It’s humbling to know that other developers had not only thought of these two concepts, but brought them to fruition in such stunning fashion. Mostly, though, it’s very encouraging to see Sony taking more of a lead in online innovation. While some people were accusing them of merely copying the competition, Sony has been quietly working on two of the most innovative ideas of this generation. “Mii too?” Give me a break.

2. Free Online
Among all the talk about the price of Sony’s console, I almost never see anyone mention the significance of Sony’s free online service. Xbox Live Gold costs $70 to sign up for 1 year, or $20 for three months. You can renew your membership for $50 a year. So if the Xbox 360 stays around for five years, you’ll be paying 70 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 = $270 to access features that Sony gives you for free.

I agree, Xbox Live is overall offering a better online service right now. But $270 better? And Sony is steadily narrowing the gap in online features. With improvements to the messaging system and support for background downloading, Sony is rapidly catching up with many of the key advantages that Live has enjoyed. Add to that the fact that Sony is offering virtually lag-free dedicated servers at no cost, while on Xbox Live you are paying for a more laggy peer-to-peer service. Furthermore, one of the biggest advertised features of Xbox Live is matchmaking, yet the implementation of this feature has been inconsistent since it is left up to the developer. The matchmaking service on Resistance: FOM, meanwhile, has been one of its biggest successes, proving that even at this early stage the PS3’s online capabilities are very competitive. And free. As the PS3 community continues to grow with new features and player-generated content from Home and Little Big Planet, Sony’s online service is looking better and better. And, again, they’re not charging you $270 for it.

3. 50 GB games
If you ever hear someone say “Blu-Ray isn’t needed for this generation,” rest assured they don’t make games for a living. At Insomniac, we were filling up DVDs on the PS2, as were most of the developers in the industry. We compressed the level data, we compressed the mpeg movies, we compressed the audio, and it was still a struggle to get it to fit in 6 gigs. Now we’ve got 16 times as much system RAM, so the level data is 16 times bigger. And the average disc space of games only gets bigger over a console’s lifespan. As games get bigger, more advanced and more complex, they necessarily take up more space. If developers were filling up DVDs last generation, there are clearly going to be some sacrifices made to fit current generation games in the same amount of space.

Granted, some really great Xbox 360 games have squeezed onto a DVD9. Gears of War is a beautiful game and shows off the highest resolution textures of anything yet released, partly because of the Unreal Engine’s ability to stream textures. This means that you can have much higher resolution textures than you could normally fit in your 512 MB of RAM. It also means that you’re going to chew up more disc space for each level. With streamed textures, streamed geometry and streamed audio, even with compression, you can quickly approach 1 GB of data per level. That inherently limits you to a maximum of about 7 levels, and that’s without multiplayer levels or mpeg cutscenes.

Sometimes people ask us, “If Resistance takes 14 gigabytes, why doesn’t it look better than Gears?” Well, for one, Resistance didn’t support texture streaming, so we had to make choices about where we spent our high-res textures. Resistance also had 30 single-player chapters, six multiplayer maps, uncompressed audio streaming, and high-definition mpegs. That all added up to a lot of space on the disc. Starting with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction we are supporting texture streaming, which will make the worlds look even better, and will also consume even more space on disc.

There’s no question that you can always cut more levels, compress the audio more, compress the textures more, down-res the mpeg movies, and eventually get any game to fit on a DVD. But you paid for a high-def experience, right? You want the highest resolution, best audio, most cinematic experience a developer can offer, right? That’s why Blu-Ray is important for games, and why it will become more important each year of this hardware cycle.

4. Casino Royale
Casino Royale is the first high definition title to crack the top 10 on Amazon’s DVD charts, rising up to number seven shortly after being released. This is significant because it dispels the myth that high definition discs are merely a niche and will never take off with the mainstream.

A lot of people have been waiting on the fence to see whether Blu-Ray or HD-DVD would emerge as the winner of the format war. Well, at this point the war is as good as over. Blu-Ray has won a TKO. It always had superior technical specs and much wider studio support, but there was the question of whether HD-DVD’s earlier release and initially lower price would capture enough of the market to make it the winner. But Blu-Ray has already surpassed HD-DVD in overall discs sold, and is currently outselling HD-DVD discs at about a 3:1 rate. Many neutral observers in the A/V community have called the war in favor of Blu-Ray. If you want minute-to-minute updates, you can follow what’s left of the format war at various locations on the internet:
http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/
http://www.hdgamedb.com/amazon/versus.aspx
These sites mainly compare Amazon sales data, but the Nielsen sales data shows the same thing: Blu-Ray discs are outselling HD-DVD by a steadily increasing margin.

Many of Disney, Fox and Sony’s biggest box office movies will release exclusively on Blu-Ray in the next three months, likely pushing the sales separation between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to a margin where many retailers will begin phasing out HD-DVD. Retailers hate a format war even more than consumers, and I suspect they’ll take the initiative to end it as quickly as possible.

5. HDMI
A lot has been said about Sony’s choice to ship with composite cables. I won’t say I agree with that decision, but I think too little has been said of the fact that even the cheaper PS3 SKU supports HDMI 1.3. The PS3 was the first consumer device to support it, and this is a very important future-proofing step. When you go to buy higher-end TVs, the PS3 will support the highest possible audio and video input the TV and receiver can accept. If and when high-def movies start requiring an Image Constraint Token, the PS3 will still be able play them in high definition.

Right now, HDMI seems primarily to be a selling point to the hardcore audio and videophiles of the world. But HDTVs are getting cheaper and more popular all the time, and consumer sophistication and knowledge of high definition audio and video is growing. In a couple years, HDMI devices will be the standard. Graphics and audio in games will also continue to improve, and more and more consumers will want HDMI in order to get the best results on their home theater setups. As this happens, Microsoft has a difficult choice – do they stick with “last gen” video output, or do they release a premium version of the Xbox 360 that includes HDMI but effectively forces early adopters to re-buy the system to get the best results? Sony ultimately made their console more expensive by including HDMI, but over the next couple years it’s likely to play out as the right choice.

6. Standard HDD
When we were developing for PS2, I was jealous of Xbox’s standard hard drive. There are so many things this allowed you to consider as a developer – virtually unlimited save data, improved load times, custom music, downloadable content and user-created content just to name a few. But since hard drives, no matter what the size, never get cheaper than about $50, Microsoft lost money trying to compete with the PS2’s price. That may be the reason they left it out of the cheaper Xbox 360 SKU, thinking that Sony would again leave out the hard drive on the PS3. Instead, Sony made the hard drive standard for both SKUs. This added to the cost of the PS3, but it also let developers use the HDD in games.

The problem with including a hard drive in one version of the 360 and not in the other is that developers can’t use it for the games. Or, at least, they can’t use it for any required features. When you are guaranteed to have at least a 20 GB hard drive in the console, you can write your load caching routines around it, or use it for your application’s storage needs. To a developer, an optional hard drive is roughly equivalent to no hard drive at all.

Another advantage of the PS3 is that it will let you put in any third party hard drive you want. From a developer’s standpoint, this is good news because the market will gradually be able to support larger downloadable games over the course of the PS3’s life. As downloadable content gets larger and more sophisticated, PS3 owners can choose to buy larger hard drives at the best market price. The more this happens, the more developers will be encouraged to create better and better downloadable games.

7. The Wii Fad Will Fade
OK, this one’s going to be controversial, but I have to say it. I like Nintendo a lot. I think Nintendo has innovated far more than any other company in the industry. And I think the Wii is really, really fun. But… let me relate to you a story that may sound familiar:

Your friend Reggie invites you over for a Wii Party. It’s awesome. You and your friends partake in whatever beverages are legally appropriate for your age group. The next day everyone who went to the party rushes out and buys a Wii.

A week later Reggie hosts another Wii Party. This time only half the group comes. It’s still fun, but there isn’t quite as much shoving to get at the Wiimote.

The next week Reggie hosts another Wii Party. You tell him you have bird flu.

Obviously I’m exaggerating, but the Wii does have many characteristics of popular mainstream fads. It’s instantaneously accessible, it’s unlike anything you’ve tried before, and it’s great fun to share with friends. In short, it’s everything Nintendo said it would be and it has captured the world’s imagination. The only downside is that the world is easily distracted. Tickle Me Elmo captured the world’s attention at one point, as did Furbies. They were both instantly accessible, were unlike anything people had seen before, and were fun to share with friends. But a year later, after everyone had seen them and tried them out, their popularity waned.

The Wii is currently riding on a massive wave of mainstream attention and has been purchased by lots of people who don’t normally play games. But how many of those people who are hooked on Wii Sports will also buy Wii Need For Speed? Mainstream fads usually run their course within a year. As the honeymoon period fades, the Wii will be going up against more and more graphically impressive games on the PS3 and Xbox 360. More people will be buying HD televisions and looking for the most immersive and stunning experiences available. For these reasons, I think the Wii will be more successful than the GameCube or N64 but in the long run will still be outsold by the PS3.

8. PS3 Has a Major CPU Advantage
The GPUs on the Xbox 360 and PS3 are roughly equivalent, with the Xbox 360 arguably having a slight edge. The difference in CPU power, however, is far greater with the PS3 enjoying the advantage. The PS3’s eight parallel CPUs (one primary “PPU” and seven Cell processors) give it potentially far more computing power than the three parallel CPUs in the Xbox 360. Just about any tech programmer will tell you that the PS3’s CPUs are significantly more powerful. The problem is that it has been challenging thus far to take advantage of the Cell’s parallel architecture.

With the PS2, Sony got away with making a fairly developer-unfriendly system, and its success allowed their hardware designers to ignore developer’s complaints as they made the PS3. People high up at Sony have realized that approach simply won’t work anymore and are trying to fix the problem. Sony is actively improving their libraries, tools and developer support in order to make PS3 development easier. They are giving first party developed techniques and code to third-party developers so that multi-platform games should start looking better on PS3.

Games developed from the ground up on PS3 are the ones that will really show off the PS3’s CPU advantage. The complexity of the distributed processing architecture means that PS3 engines won’t fully blossom until a little later in the lifecycle than the PS2. This has put the PS3 at a disadvantage early in its lifecycle, but within two years you will see games that surpass what is possible on the Xbox 360.

9. PS2 still outselling 360
I know, it’s outselling the PS3 by an even larger margin. But the continued strong PS2 sales really are a good thing for Sony. Anyone buying a PS2 at this point is probably not going to buy a PS3 or Xbox 360 in the next year. And when they do choose to buy the current generation of hardware, the PS3 will be in a lot better position. The price will have come down, the game library will be broad, and the top PS3 titles will probably have the edge in both graphics and sound. Just as important, the people buying into the PS2 now will be getting into many of Sony’s exclusive franchises that they will then later want to play on the PS3.

10. Something For Everyone
One of Sony’s biggest advantages is that it has strong franchises in every genre. Whereas Microsoft’s successful titles are mostly M-rated, and Nintendo’s are mostly E-rated, Sony has a big list of hit titles across the spectrum. When a 30-something gamer (like me) goes to buy a game console, it’s a lot easier to justify the purchase when there are games he can play with his kids as well as more mature stuff.

To Microsoft’s credit, they are doing a good job of catching up. The acquisition of Rare and the development of Viva Pinata have helped to broaden their spectrum. But it takes time to build a franchise, and Sony has been building their suite of titles for over a decade. Consider the breadth, success and critical acclaim of some of their exclusive properties: The Getaway, God of War, Gran Turismo, Hot Shots Golf, Jak and Daxter, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank, Shadow of the Colossus, Singstar, Sly Cooper, SOCOM, and Twisted Metal. These are all million-plus sellers worldwide that are either already announced or likely to appear on PS3. Add to this Sony’s new line up of first-party titles, including Heavenly Sword, Lair, Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, Uncharted and White Knight Story, and they have an even deeper and stronger line-up than what they had on PS2.

A lot of industry watchers and even a handful of publishers have been quick to write Sony off this generation, and I think that’s near-sighted. Sony has made a lot of decisions with the PS3 that may have slowed them down in the short run, but should give them a big advantage in the long run. The high price, hardware complexity, and the uncertainty of the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD format war have contributed to the PS3’s slow start out of the gate. But as the price drops, developers master the hardware, and Blu-Ray becomes the new DVD standard, Sony’s early disadvantages turn to advantages. As downloadable games become more common, the 60 GB hard-drive will be a big advantage to developers and consumers. As games get bigger and more sophisticated, Blu-Ray storage will increasingly become a major advantage. And as more and more of Sony’s exclusive first-party titles get released, the PS3 will begin to outsell the competition on a monthly basis. Those publishers who have shifted resources away from PS3 development will find themselves behind the curve and losing money as the market center gradually shifts toward the PS3 over the next two years.

I’m sure many of you may have comments about my point of view. If you do, please email [email removed] and I’ll do my best to respond. Fire up ;p

I just thought it was interesting tis all.

They are all biased opinions of course. I brought the Wii and I've been a gamer for .. years!!

If I wanted a Blu Ray player I would get a PS3 but I don't. If I want to play games I'll stick with my Wii and my PS2 etc .. PS3 has no games at all really at this stage.

Like I said they launched it at the wrong time.

Until it drops in price I'm not wasting my money on something I will hardly use.

Oh and I don't care about the 360 .. not an XBox fan here. Always been a Sony/Nintendo girl smile.gif

Btw I wasn't trying to agure in here, just stated what the people from EB games told me laugh.gif I love Playstations but way too much money for the little usage I would get from it.

Only time will tell if it's a flop winksmiley02.gif

*goes back to playing Zelda Oot on Wii*

I just played a ps3 2 days ago, motorstorm got boring real fast. im waiting for gta4 and some other good games before buying one, only console that appeals to me.
{Bunny}
Motorstorm's not the only game out tongue.gif

There's 33 games currently out.

Maybe you need to broaden your horizons from car orientated games?

There's an AWESOME Ninja game, out at the moment if you're into that kind of thing.

it was the only game on the demo tongue.gif

ive seen the games, the problem is most are already on other consoles so no much point paying twice the amount to play the same game. im waiting for games that will push the console, like killzone 2, ff13..ec...but they arent coming out til next year, or late this year. sad.gif

I think it is smile.gif

But since I'm not paying for it I don't care.

I'm a bit pissed that not all the PS2 games play on it to be honest .. can't play Buzz or San Andreas sad.gif

Graphics are awesome as were expected, but I def wouldn't buy it until it went down in price and got some more games that appealed to me.

But playing Mario Party on my Wii against my friends was awesome fun thumbsupsmiley.png I heart.gif my Wii!!
