The revival of anthems events has prompted me to ask the question... What is the message?
I am one who always was, and still tries to be, front row Centre when one of my tunes is Calling my name. There are no words to desribe the jubilation that is felt when you are swept up in the musiC, and you know what's Coming from the very first Chord, and you are already poised in line with the DJs position, waiting for the mix to drop in from the previous traCk.

These are auditory snapshots still ringing sweetly in my ears from a time gone by and I hesitate to believe that that unity with Culture and song exist today. For in that time, yet to be revisited in the hearts and faCes of today's stompers, there was purpose and passion. The musiC was about the musiC, and the dediCated followers beamed with natural eCstaCy, and derived their amphetameniC energy from the sounds of the soul. The DJ was delivering a message and everyone without agenda to witness an enlightenment.

Is this the Core of what anthems intends? This is what the musiC from this time embodied. There is no Cause to resurreCt a preCious era, if those who truly appreCiate the sound, are insulted by Capitalist agenda and moCked by naive beginners who don't stand a ChanCe of ever knowing the lesson to be learnt.[

I might get some sleep before tackling that one hehe

The message is found individually for all of us in a different way through the music - it affects all of us in a unique manner, but there is a common thread of happiness and the universal theme of the power of music throughout. For me, anthems is about sharing that "amphetameniC energy" you describe with other like-minded individuals, to whom I don't have to explain myself. A simple, appreciative and understanding smile from the stranger next to you on the dancefloor when those first few notes of a euphoric anthems track, that brings back a flood of memories, kicks in on a massive club sound-system... in that tiny microsecond, all of life's cares are dissolved and forgotten. That is the message of anthems for me and the reason music from the era has been revived in a club environment - you can't have those moments listening to music in your lounge-room!

Shae, don't invent your own "causes" and "messages" for anthems - there is no capitalist agenda! Someone has to make a living out of this - unless of course you would like to start providing these events to everyone free of charge, out of the kindness of your heart and for the good of the music. The majority of those involved with this website are volunteers - we just love the music and want to share with as many people as we can. Whether they're old-school and know the music like the back of their hands, or are hearing it for the first time - it doesn't really matter, as long as it touches their hearts.

As for being "moCked by naive beginners who don't stand a ChanCe of ever knowing the lesson to be learnt", I don't feel mocked by people who don't understand this era and its significance - I feel sorry that they weren't there to experience it first-hand! Everyone has to start their journey somewhere - are you also the kind of person who blasts their horn at "L" Platers on the road when they're a bit slow to take off from the traffic lights?????

Good work Rave Princess, your words are true to all.

I have been basking in the delight of electronic tunes since the late 1990's. I often rewind back to Rotterdam and the heavy bass beats that fought for fastest BPM.

Last night at UW10 I was taken aback to hear some of these tunes relived... needless to say my heart pounded and send my mind into a frenzied spin of extacy.

The lesson here ? Be free and enjoy yourself. Spread the love

regards
Joey

Ummmm.. no - I don't take pleasure in beeping at L Platers on the road - but thank you for the dig.

As impressive as your response is,"Rave Princess", it is not at all relevant to my POV. Unfortunately the point has been missed entirely, but looking back, I can see where your interpretation is deriven. I am not able to elaborate on where I was coming from as certain elements of the topic are not suitable for public forum.

Addressing your post though, I agree with most of what you say. It is obvious from your defensive take, that you love the music as do I and why wouldn't we share it with those that were not fortunate enough to be there - on a different note, what is to be gained from going backwards when true lovers of the sound should be anticipating what comes out of the future. We should be promoting the culture of "now" and developing the scene so that it may carry on.

Anyhoo, I was referring more to the intentions of attendees more so than what you have picked up on in attacking anthems. And for the record, I relive the moments quite fequently in my loungeroom, and in my car, and at my friend's houses and anywhere I get the chance!.. the thing where you and I are similar is that we have that passion.

(and thank you Paul, I know you know what I mean

Nice dodge - bit difficult to understand where you're coming from if you refuse to elaborate. rolleyes.gif You can't complain about being mis-interpreted if you're not prepared to explain yourself fully.

Then join the anthems team and do exactly that! We'd love to have your input.

The "message" in my opinion is for those that were able to party in the late 80's/early 90's can relive some memories, while those that missed out can enjoy and appreciate it in this era.

Its the music I tell you.

Once a "classic" track comes on, all I want to do is dance. If I hear it on the radio or something, some memories flood back of a certain time and place that I heard it and remembering when I cut it sick on the dance floor. And its like a timeless motion of a generation of smiling clubbers and ravers moving/grooving/dancing in union to the sounds of a bygone era.

Thanks to Paul and the rest of the crew that organises anthems, we get to relive and experience the music from that era.

PS - What defines an "anthem"?
Davin
The intended message is always open to debate and interprtation. What an individual takes away from anthems can be a totally different thing again and is ultimately up to them.

It's clear some feel that an era should be left alone to gracefully fade away in our memories instead of trying to revive it one more time for a few extra thrills. Others would die if they didn't get a chance to relive memories of old and catch up with friends. Some will turn up just to pop lollies or pretend to be part of the crew who were there from the start......even if they were only 10yo when this music was released. Many will be thankful for the chance to experience the music in a rave enviornment that would otherwise have passed by years before their generation was old enough to participate.

What I get from it is a mixed bag. Great memories, catching up with otherwise retired ravers, and watching the smiles light up faces of ravers old and new smile.gif

Of course we could just be over analysing and totally buggering it up LOL

Screw the lesson. Lets just have fun

person 2 stops to get there breath...
person 1 "I can dance longer than you"
person 2 "You've had more assistance than me!"
person 1 stops and gets defensive "Have not, I drive my stamina and staying power from the music"
person 2 "So do I"
person 3 calls pout to them from front and centre.... "I WIN!!! I WIN!!!"

My point? Everyone has there different opinions and views (and good ones at that!), as to what they get from the scene, and why they enjoy it.
There is too much seperation happing these days, hardhouse vs freeform, hardcore vs dnb etc... everyone is working against one another... but why? wouldn't it be much better to work as one??

This is what I believe the anthems mission to be: To become one on the dancefloor. Newbie or old schooler, male or female, promoters, DJs, dancers, lighting crews... EVERYONE!!! Lets all work as a team, party as a team (probably recover by ourselves tho... I know how bad I can be unsure.gif )

So, lets just all crank together and have a FUCKING WICKED TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 2 cents
party popper
I think there are some good points being made here and this topic has become somewhat controversial, I don't understand however why everyone thinks there is a "message" or "point" to holding anthems.
Why does there have to be a point or message behind it?
And if you so strongly believe there is then you are truely missing a point!

The point of just going out and enjoying the night with friends, a great atmosphere and awsome music wether it be from a time gone by, now or in future events!

As Kandii said we should all be together on this as a team!
No matter what each individual person takes away from the experience, that is their own choice and what makes everyone who they are.

LOL! You are probably right there Davin

Either way I am looking forward to a great night at anthems hearing some old favs and probably new ones, of which will probably be resurrected in 10 years time as the old skool anthems lives on and this debate will begin all over again by beginners who are only just hearing some of this for the first time! But you know what... I hope so!

Enjoy people!

My 2 cents!

I think we could go for a bit of a ZEN philosophy on this topic cool.gif

So the message to take from this topic is

"I RAVE THEREFORE I AM"

So has anybody learnt a lesson from attending anthems??

I learnt that I'm not as young as I used to be but I've met some wonderful people here and can definitely call friends than mere acquaintances. smile.gif

I've learnt that to have the best time imaginable, all factors must essentially come together at the same time.

Good friends, good music, a good vibe, a good situation and a good action/task.

I've noticed that each anthems event I have attended has provided me with a venue for this seemingly perfect combination to take place again and again.

Without experiencing anthems, Anthemites and anthems events I never would have known how much fun I was/am capable of having biggrin.gif

So yeah...

what a great thread smile.gif

As a musician and writer myself, i really have respect for the music that anthems events entail. I'm not a fan of most of the tracks that are coming out today, which are mostly a rehash of something old anyways. I think music at the moment is not at its best. Regardless of wether is it is raver music, the 70's or even jazz, music get continuously revived. I guess what puts rave music under spotlight for this reason is because of the drugs.

No good music needs drugs to make it good. Yet at the same time, they can enhance it. But by no means does this make it necessary. I love going out straight, just getting high off the music and the vibe. One of the most memorable moments of my life will be at the front row of the prodigy, and keith waving back at me... OMG it was awesome!!!

But even in the past drugs influenced music e.g. in the 60's acid was prevelant in alot of rock culture and music, but that does not change how great the music is. Music and drug culture go hand in hand. But everyone experiences music for different reasons.

to add, i'm only 21. I missed out on partying with this music, but i listened to it when i was 10 on my radio and the like... After about 98, i found music went crap (dont get me wrong there is good stuff, just alot of it was over-compressed, over done etc) I think music is something to share, and in this environment created in anthems, i find it amazing... Its helped me to appreciate a love a wide variety of people, and be part of a community.. that alone is priceless

im 26... soon to be 27.. im from the country.. and i played bass guitar in a pub rock band for 5 yrs.. im as far from a 'raver' as u can get

some of my earliest memorys of club music was stuff on cassette.. when i first heard " do u liek yoru hard coreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!" i had a set of 6x9s a pioneer cassette player and some 5.25's that was the day i decided i wanted subs.. amps.,. cd player. stacker..

if it wasnt for the anthems community and Paul Hamons desire to share his obvisou love of the music and era with us all.. id never have had the chance to feel share and achive what i have now.

i dont care for " communist agendas' or anything else its the vibe.. its the music .. its the whole atmosphere of a massive group of peopel with no stress or agro amongst them.

anthems members have in the last 11 months become my closest freinds. people ive never had in my life or never would of met with out this forum and this music.

my lesson... its the freindships that make life so great. the music that makes the night so great and the fact every track is some ones favourite tune.

roll it all into one night.. and u cant go wrong..

its made my life certainly alot brighter.
asianfunkphenomenar
WOW Del...you're getting old you country bumpkin tongue.gif

Hmmm...what is the lesson? I thinks its really about the scene and the vibe. The people, the musicians and all the factors that bring our love for music and dancing are important. It floods memories of good times. Those good times dont have to go way back then. They could have happened now or just recently or when some song/track comes on and makes you happy or go nuts. anthems doesnt restrict itself to old school dance music, it can be related to the likes of Freddy Mercury when he sang "we are the champions" or the Beastie Boys with their anthem "...got to fight...for your right...to party...".

Not only in our scene have we made good friends but I've made some close ones doing the whole band circuit and covers scene.

hmmm...I've just forgotten what I was gonna say...oh well edit later
