When it comes to defects and getting through a regency inspection, there seems to be a lot or rumour and bullshit...half of it comming from Regency themselves!

I was defected for being too low, and my vehicle has a set of adjustable height coil-overs. Everyone told me I wouldn't get past regency with them on the car, so I decided to go to the source and get the truth. When I rang Regency, they told me the car would not be passed with them on, unless they were butchered so they can't be adjusted lower.

I asked for the legislation that contained these requiements, was then directed to a document on SA Gov website which mentioned nothing of the sort, and then got an admission that this was actually an unwritten regency rule.

Well, it went through regency today and it was suggested that "I adjust the rears up a few millimetres" as the car was too low by 2mm when it's full of fuel. The inspectors seemed quite ok with adjustable height suspension, so don't fall victim to their bluff.

I did however get further defects for the following:
number plate's bottom edge with "Festival state" bent under the bumper and not visible
radius rod bushes showing signs of persishing (common skyline trait)
rear child seat mounts missing when rear speakers were replaced
exhaust far too f*kin loud LOL ...105db (or 96 with the silencer in) - way over the legal 90

had to take my car through regency. got defected for the following:-

Selt belt not retracting up "fast" enough.... it was retracting but very slowly!
right rear tail light not "red" ..... it had faded to an off red!
window tint too dark ..... ok i was hoping more then anything this may go through!
gear stick indicator not lining up 100% correctly with gear.... was out a few millimetres!
retreads i bought especially to get through regency were regrrded as too bald!!!!!!!!

along with these stupid faults they also managed to find a few more that total up to 11. total bullshit ones that have nothing to do with safety.

anyway convinced that they fuckin drill young drivers with done up cars i took the mags off and made my old man take it through the 2nd time .... and what to you no... not 1 hassle!!!

even the wanker that inspected it told my old man that whoever picked those little faults was being a bit harsh! i bet it was the same bloody guy!

they make me sick.

Here's a good one to remember boys...

If you get defected for having rims too large, or 'bald' tyres, just go to your local Government owned buidling and rack their stock rims with plenty of tread from their fleet cars, that way, you don't have to fork out for downsized rims or buy new tyres!

Friendly advice from SUPERSHOOTER!

Im glad that all these modified cars get defected and off the roads. You cant expect backyard or "professional" suspension mods to be safe.

I hope that soon SA brings in roadworthiness certificates like the eastern states do. Its the reason you dont see many Jap cars in Melbourne or Sydney because they are UNSAFE when modified.

Now, I ask you, why do you modify your cars? Is it because you all have CAMS licences and race in sanctioned events? Thats the reason isnt it? You surely wouldnt be wanting to break any road laws and go speeding now would you?

Went through a RBT on Days road round lunch time on Monday. Blew nothing as i was on my lunch break but he defectd my mates car for the front tyres being a bit shabby. I bet if it was my car he would of went to town on it. But the thing that fucked me of that my liscence was expired by like 8 days so he gave me a whopping $294 fine!. Shit you can do 25 ova the limit and not get that much. So people the lesson here is that its safer to drive 25 over the limit then to forget to renew your liscence. The fine proves that! The good thing was that the defect was a cop shop job so its off now.

Mayday?? Surely not? Why do people wana modify cars?? The same reason HSV and FTP like to play around with cars. People want person custom fast nasty looking cars. Isnt that the right of the individual to do what thay please??

HSV and FPV are NOT clowns. They have very extensive experience and have highly qualified engineers designing some very fine automobiles. You can not make a comparison of FPV, HSV or even Nismo to some crappy home job or even some garage. Further, these organisations (with the exception of Nismo because they are foreign) have their finished vehicles all passing the strict ADR rules.

It may be the right of the individual to do as they please with their car, but it is also the right of other individual road users to know that other cars are as safe as their bog standard ones and are not going to have a suspension failure, have an environmental concern (too loud an exhaust or breach emissions rules for example) or go skidding accross the road because the tyres are too bald.

I am a sports car enthusiast myself, and I am in a club with many other like minded people. The difference between what I do and many others is we all have CAMS racing licences and do our stuff off public roads in a proerly sanctioned environment.

The problem there is you are unlicensed, therefore your insurance is void, both any comprehensive you have plus the 3rd party bodily you get with your registration. Its quite simple, you should not be on the road. Hence the large sum of the fine. Im not exactly the 'legal eagle' myself, but if i was being a dickhead on the road and t-boned you or something that day, it is more than likely the insurance company would be in my favour, as you were completely in the wrong because you should not have been on the road in the first place.

Fines suck no matter how large or small. Sorry to hear your out of pocket $294.

I can see your point there. I have modified my car for the pleasure of molding the car into what I want it to be, not for racing or anything, otherwise I would of taken it to malalla with my CAMS affiliated club. sure some modifications are dangerous, like cut springs etc, but what about those old rust bombs? you can't seriously tell me that cars that roll off the production line are the safest. they are made to ADRs and to cost factors. they are designed to stay well within the road limits and no more but people like to push that limit and thats when accidents happen.

here in Adelaide, it seems more accidents happen with "stock" cars than any other car. Commodores have a huge fame in that stakes too, especially with the stealing of cars and what not. Jap car are wonderfully engineered to run over the normal limits that are impossed here in Australia but the modifications for things like drifting is what them makes them a time bomb on the roads, and you'll find its not the car that is the problem, its the driver. I have also thought this, stop wasting money on trying to get the modified cars off the road and spend that money on educating people on how to drive a car properly, advanced driver training should be compulsory.

What type of mods do you determine are dangerous?? A mate has a Skyline with a turbo timmer and he got defected for that where as i have a Nissan Patrol with one and i have had no worries. He has big wheels i have big sunraysia wheels. Where do you draw the limit??

I once had a XD Falcon with a stinker 351 with a toploader with a racing shifter and a 9" with 3.55 gears. This thing went like a rocket. I had big brakes and good suspension. Most of the work was done by myself and my brothers which work in work shops. The only work got done in a workshop was the heads. With my falcon it got defect because i didnt have any heaters. The excuse was that i couldnt defog the windscreen during winter. And when you come to think of it thats a safety aspect. But he said the rest of the car was fine but netherless he put it through regency

Fair enough i can understand your thoughts on hotting up cars so to speak but it comes down to the drivers. I dont think you should have a cams liscence or any other type of permit to mod up cars. That means when your getting window tint and wheels on your car you would have to have some sought of permit as that to me is modifyn your car. I cant see it working as what would people do who want just these things??

There are rules you have to go by and you can get the info you need at Regency park on what you are and not allowed to do to cars. There are some pieces of shit going around and in my time i have proberlly owned a couple pieces it when people start to hot these up and neglecting the safety aspects like tyres, seat belts, seats, breaks etc.... These are what should get targeted more often not cars where you can see the money and time put into it. To me getting defected for shit like a turbo timmer is just petty and revenue raising

These are just my thoughts

i also agree with most of the last 2 points.

there r alot of old bombs out there which r a hell of alot worse that the stuff that gets defectd now day, like getting done for window tint, i know this is not right but some times i think that they r going for some of us seening that we have got heaps of money to do up our cars, so lets pick on them. revenue raising lol

i recon if u r going to spend ur money on doing up ur car, do it propply, eg.. dont cut ur springs, buy lowered, there not that much for a set, ur an idiot other wise!!

one on the main reasons why i started to do stuff to my car, is looks, and a little bit of handling, i think we can all say that standed spring and shocks, r shit, they r tooo soft, well that what i think anyway.

i really dont care how fast i can go from 0- 100km in the fastest time, cause really where can u do that safety?? only on the track

oh well thats my 2 cents worth biggrin.gif

they pick on done up cars rather then old bombs coz they no the following:-

someone that has spent that much on his/her car must love their car.
therefore they will pay whatever required to get the defects off. in fines and modding it back, then will most likely pay for the mods again when its back out. therefore pumping money back into the econemy.

if an old bomb was slapped with a defect, it will most likely be dumped somewhere for the council to pick up, therefore the governemnt dont get their cash to lift the defect, and these ppl are just as likely to go buy another bomb then to spend the cash required to fix it up. Hence not really doing the job of getting the bombs off the roads.

it is also a fact that these bombs hardly make it above 100km p/h so cops/government/public dont have a real issue with them compared to done up imports/v8's that are always seen around speeding.

its a sad fact that the small percentage that do act irresponsibily give the whole group in general a bad image.

my 2 cents

That is a very narrow minded stance to take. I'm guessing that you're not an engineer?

The $4000 worth of aftermarket 'off the shelf' coilover suspension fitted to my car had thousands of hours of R&D invested before they were released. Combining with 4 wheel steer, they take the handling and predictability of my car to levels unseen on any HSV or Tickford around. Huge high performance tyres, give stopping and cornering grip levels that would see a factory Holden or Ford on it's roof or slamming into an unavoidable object.

Please don't put me in the same class of backyarders that take to springs with a gas axe or hacksaw. Anything I do is carefully planned, and no modifications are started if there is even the smallest doubt about safety. A female cyclist would not be alive today if it was not for insane control and chuckability that it provides.

Why do I modify my vehicle? Because I am not in the habit of driving under-tyred, lurching 1700kg missiles (called family cars), that put the passengers' soft plushy ride, and ecenomical tyre replacement ahead of cornering, avoidance and stopping control.

I was gonna mention that about the engineering, but the 4WS is a debateable thing in terms of safety as for some its hard to get used to..

I'm currently on the way to become an Mechanical Engineer and I know that all engineers in Australia need to follow a code of ethics. With this, you cannot design an aftermarket suspension part which is going to endanger people's lives. But saying that, the people who try to take the cheap way out of certain things are endangering everyone, not just themselves (eg cutting springs rolleyes.gif ).

today driving to work, I saw a stock as a rock VN commie with a hell of alot of brake noise from the rear, now, to me, that is very dangerous, but some how, I reckon that guy is never going to see a defect sticker. Education is more valuable than just defecting every guy who takes pride in their car, which is usually the ones who heavily modify their cars..

I also noticed another thing that causes alot of accidents/problems for drivers and cars alike, the condition of our roads!! I have read somewhere, which was from a very reliable source of car information but forget where, that you should always avoid going over bumps with a car.. Why? Because it damages your cat converter.. So what? theres a health/safety issue there. Our roads are full of potholes and what not. The money they spend on going after people who have a car 2 mm lower than legal should be spent on making our roads better to that those 2 mm wouldn't be dangerous after all.

well, thats my rant..

and Harley, like the sounds of your XD, got any pics?

Im glad that all these modified cars get defected and off the roads.  You cant expect backyard or "professional" suspension mods to be safe.

Now, I ask you, why do you modify your cars?  Is it because you all have CAMS licences and race in sanctioned events?  Thats the reason isnt it?  You surely wouldnt be wanting to break any road laws and go speeding now would you?

One thing that I find extremly annoying, people that put 110% ricetek 'enhancements' on their vehicles and complain when they get a defect. If you put ricetek stickers all over your car, with a milo can exhaust and oversized rims and you can pretty much bet on it that you'll get a pretty yellow sticker.

There is one word defect sulkers should listen to: ENGINEER. If the job is done right and you have the certificates to show your car is engineered, not ricetek modified, you won't get any hassles from Police!

all costs $$$ to get engineering and there are only a few chattered engineers regency will recognise/accept to sign off on mods.. but its cheaper than the defect stickers..

But saying that, the people who try to take the cheap way out of certain things are endangering everyone, not just themselves (eg cutting springs  ).

today driving to work, I saw a stock as a rock VN commie with a hell of alot of brake noise from the rear, now, to me, that is very dangerous, but some how, I reckon that guy is never going to see a defect sticker. Education is more valuable than just defecting every guy who takes pride in their car, which is usually the ones who heavily modify their cars..

I also noticed another thing that causes alot of accidents/problems for drivers and cars alike, the condition of our roads!! fo_sho_man nah i dont have any pics sorry. It was just a plain white XD lowerd with 15x8's Dragway Indys and tinted windows. The engine bay was spotless. Did have normal wirring loom but neatly cabled tied around. The motor was painted ford blue with chrome rocker covers and a chrome air filter. I did have a 3" Exhaust but i had a muffler that made it quieter and had more a bark then a roar. The interior had XF Ghia sets and trim. It was just a clean looking unit nothing flash and for the reason of the motor being lumpy i didnt want to attract bad attention so hence the stock look. I did drive it around for a while, had police comment on it when i got liscence checks so really i must of had a police officer who had to get the peper work up to date or a bad day. You get that i spose. No way that i could afford to drive it now anyhow. Its bad enough paying $1.20 for diesel!

Isn't funny how you improve your car to make it handle better, stop better or even be safer and you get defected for it.

I got defected for having a roll cage in my car. The excuse as to why i couldn't have it was "you could bang your head on it". My answer to that was, the only way I'll bang my head on it is, if my car is on its roof and then the roll cage has probably saved my life. So be it!!!

This is my favourite one. It's against the law to not wear a seatbelt and the penalty for not wearing one is a fine and a loss of demerit points. But why is it a defect if you fit a better seat belt than standard?? ie a 4 point harness...?

Glad to hear you got the suspension issue sorted. I will keep that in mind!!

I passed ok when i saw you there on Monday Davin. They were pretty casual about most things.

Just to let everyone else know, carbon fibre bonnets are ok. I passed with mine no problems..

Was your rollcage CAMS approved? If so it means its 100% safe.

If it was just a vanity bar then I can see dramas.

It meets CAMS specifications for all forms of motorsport except National Rally Compliance. eg. Circuit, Hillclimb its ok.

I have driven my car at Mallala at open days and club days and used it in the Classic Adelaide Rally last year as a course car. The roll cage wasnt in the car then though. But will be refitted into my car again for this years Classic Adel Rally.

It doesnt matter if ithe cage is CAMS approved or not if its fitted to a street car. My cage does not obstruct vision, or acces to get in or out of the car. It is vey non obtrusive.

Hmmm... are there any govt "guidelines" to installing rollcages in cars?

The only govt guideline is that you can have a half roll cage in a street car, but then have to reregister the car as a 2 seater only...

which is ok if you never want to use your back seat or have passengers...!

the roll cage and racing harness points are the ones I really feel are ridiculous

they both make your car safer if correctly installed, for shits sake

transport sa couldnt organise a root in a brothel

Heres another classic for you..

Its against the law to wear a helmet in your car whilst driving on the road...

why..?

all you ppl seem to be missing the point here.

if your car has the following:-

Huge brakes
harness seat belts
roll cages
wearing a helmet

then the government "assumes" ppl that do these mods are looking to be driving a hell of alot faster then the 100km/h national limit.

its quite stupid i know. coz you dont need to be going over 100km/h to roll off the edge of a hill.
