In the tradition of this post - All about viruses - I have decided to do a post for firewalls..

Do you use a firewall? If so, what do you use and what do you think of it??

Tiny Firewall is a good free one.. for a month.. very handy. not using one at moment. avast does most teh jobs a fire wall would do.

Dedicated hardware based firewall here. An old P3 600 is doing the job at the moment, and t's got a modfied smoothwall install running on it. I couldn't be happier!

i used to have smoothwall on a 550.. ran very sweet. remote access is pretty cool and very reilable

For windows, I recommend using an the latest (which is old) version of WinRoute Pro 4.51 (or close too). It's light weight and easy to find a serial for! But it does take some understanding of firewalls and networking to use.

i've been using zone alarm for as long as I can remember. Its free for home users & it does the trick
DeLr
yeah i had zonealarm.. but it had a conflict with AVAST so i had to remove on or the other...

ZoneAlarm is to annoying and simple. It doesn't like having simple rules, and it wouldn't let me download a crack for it whilst it was on. PHFT! Fuck that!

Me i used to use sygate personal firewall and loved it with the freeware avg, but i was getting too much spyware still even with the scans, so now am using Kaspersky and am pretty impressed with the results

i too am a fan of the smoothwall, works a treat for me smile.gif but for a single pc i have an old version of Tiny that is completely free and I have never had a problem with it (v2.11)

nothing like that smoothwall for sharing a dialup connection ... tried ipcop too but had "smoother" service from the smoothwall, so stuck with it

I have Norton Internet Security, along with Sygate (made by the same company)

My sister used to work for Symantec, anybody interested in a copy of the Corporate version, give me a buzz
Sangr
Whats the difference between the Corp version and the homebody versions mate? Also is Zone Alarm the best one around?
overdoser
Unlimited virus upgrades/updates, no registration key etc... lol

Symantec are probably the best around, they're the ones who hire hackers to make their programs (they hire them to work out how to defend against viruses/hacks)

When I was using a firewall I was on ZoneAlarm Pro, and BlackICE before that .. Symantec Antivirus Corporate does the trick by itself now though.

Back in the day I had many programs running at once. now I have no confidental data on here so i couldnt care less tongue.gif

BlackICE was great, also had DNS based blocking through another program... wish i could remember the names of all the applications... one things for sure.. windows firewall is SHIT

I will say one thing.... ZoneAlarm causes more harm then good. I have uninstalled it off countless PC's to nearly tripple their performance... unless you have a very fast PC dont even think about it
Sangr
Hmm...maybe thats why my computer doesnt run too well or that some of the sites I visit take ages to load. I'm running Zone Alarm Security Suite with unlimited updates for the next 100 years.

/agree @ smoothwall, here's how to install it. get an old pc 200MHz<, boot from cd, enter, enter, enter, enter, enter, it works smile.gif. the advantage to having a separate device for firewalling/routing is:
1. it takes the load off your pc
2. eliminates the need to have a firewall on your pc at all.
3. is far more secure as it's a purpose built device and not running on top of a block of swiss cheese.
4. if anything will speed up your connection smile.gif

to add to point 2, you still need virus protection on your pc. i recommend Avast Antivirus as it's 100% free for non-commercial use and in my experience has out performed symantec products for the following reason. Viruses attack systems, all systems have virus protection, what is the most popular program people run? and the last question, what is the first thing a virus is going to try and disable?... Symantec, McCafey etc. are the most targetted products around. the other advantage to running avast is as it's offered free for home use hackers tend to leave it alone for ethical reasons, open-source/freeware. i'm not saying it's not targetted, just a whooooole lot less than the rest smile.gif

remembered my DNS blocker was called protowall i think.. works quite well for blocking spyware IP's, etc... so even if you get spyware. it cant communicate with its destination IP smile.gif
