There are millions of different tyres on the market these days. Different sizes, tread patterns, profiles, and compounds. What are your thoughts and experiences with the tyres you have chosen.

I personally have tried a few different brands and types in the past. From retreads to low profile rubber bands.

In the past I had GoodYear Eagle GA's which I found to be a pretty decent all round tyre. From the GA's I went to Bob Jane All Rounders which seemed to last a long time and keep me on the road when needs be, but a shit tyre at the end of the day.

Right now I'm running Bridgestone Potenza's. I'm swearing by these tyres at the moment. Good grip in tight corners but also allow for a bit of drift when needs be. The only downside is that they are a softer compound to the shit I had before so they dont last quite as long, and cost a bit more to replace.

What tyres do you have? What tyres have you had? Have you had any bad experiences relating to the type of tyre you were using at the time? Cmon peeps, tell me a story.

Agree with ya there oldskoolie. Im runnin the potenza's aswell and havent had a problem at all, although theyre lookin like slicks at the moment. Thanx for reminding me i need tyres smile.gif

Soft arent they... they would last 10 times longet if the roads were carpeted!

when cash is tight ill opt for Kellys.

I think the potenzas are around $105 each. Should give them a go Decepticon
Decepticonr
i may have to do that. are they low profile?
spiltekr
not too sure if they come in lp, ones i got are /75
Oldskoolier
mine are 215/40R17's and they come in 30's too from memory.

Firestone make a good tyre. I had Firestone TZ100's on my impreza before the potenza's and the only reason i changed tyre was because the potenza's were on the set of wheels i bought. But i dont think i'll go back unless i have to. But to replace the lower profile i believe its around $250 per corner. Luckily i get 37.6% discount on Bridgstone tyres through working for aus post. biggrin.gif

oh tyres.. well.. I have no luck with those because the cars I have need higher load ratings than the norm.. although, I have had some Yoko A539s and I swear they are the biggest piece of cr@p I have ever spent $200/tyre on.. never again. Hankook make some nice tyres at really good prices.. Toyo performance tyres are very good for the price also. both my cars run 45 series tyres, so they add up to a bit of $$$ in the end..

Retreads are great! BEST. TRACTION. EVER.

Nah, I got a small 13" wheel, 155s, so $70 a tyre is great haha! Go the Kuhmos tongue.gif

ive ran yokies hancooks and currently GoodYear Eagle F1's on the rx7 yokies nice.. expencive.. hancooks for a cheaper tyre pretty good.. but nothing comes close to the F1's ive even taken the car to mallala and circuit raced it on those tyres pushing so hard very nice tyre!
joker4r
the best tyres i have ever had was TOYO RA1, there a road/track tyres, they r awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they where already on the mags when i brought them, they where a very soft compound on them and will prob only get 20.000 km out of them. so when it was time to get new tyre i priced them up, but at $450 each, i said pass, bugger!!!!

but on the tyre talk, heres ones i found at auto salon on sunday

forgot about those F1s, they have the wrong load rating for my lancer, but did have them the first time I bought mags for my lancer and they were brilliant, gripped to the very end..

If you're ripping through your tyres to quickly, I would suggest you get either a heavier car (or more down force), or ease off the accelerator and ease on the brake more through the corners!

If you're tyres are lasting too long, then you either need to get a lighter car (or less down force), or ease on the accelerator and ease off the brak through the corners! :-)

Also remember... If your car (stock standard) run's 17in rims and 45's, and you put some low profile 35's, you have changed your final gear ratio by a sizeable amount, and you have decreased your contact patch a fair amount too. Unless you're going to change your gearbox and or rims accordingly, you're going to have to do the modifying with your foot (see top).

Most tyres that are out there are good enough for what you need them for... if you stick to the standards! Pump them up correctly, make sure your suspension is adequate, don't change your rim's size/tyre height, and don't floor it too much, unless you want to wear them down. :-)

This has been a paid presentation by Peter the Police Panda!

13x 60 x205 are actually more expencive to buy than 15" tyres wink.gif

tho the eagles are 15x 195 x 50 lost some tread width but the F1s sure make up for it...

on a s2 rx7. weight 1084kg lowered a lil needs more.. aftermarket suspencion nothing too flash tho. i want to do some more work for the track on her. but its all $$$$

as an alround performance tyre I am putting another vote for

POTENZAS

nice , grippy, predictable (progressive release rate)

PS I try to do my braking in a STRAIGHT line, call me old fashioned laugh.gif
Oldskoolier
I too wash off alot of speed way before corners then get out nice and wide and accellerate through. PPL in traffic must wonder WTF im doing slowing down so early and then dissappearing through a corner. biggrin.gif
jase31r
long as your not swerving right b4 you turn left there is no problem laugh.gif laugh.gif

definater
Well you're supposed to drive your car like you ride your motorbike. Break before the corner (when you're still going straight), it increases the contact patch and weight over the front wheels, then turn through the corner at a constant speed, and as the corner unwinds accelerate.

Slow in-fast out is a concept lost on most drivers dry.gif

My favourite tyres of the last few years would be the Falkin FK 451. Tempe Tryes in Sydney warned me they are a winter tyre and will destroy themselves in summer. 10 00km's of summer driving and I had to agree with them, but oh dear...did they grip laugh.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif blink.gif biggrin.gif

At $370 each (Tempe Sydney price) for a 265/35/18, they weren't cheap, but the best price I got quoted in Adelaide was $550 each. They all muttered something about Tempe doing direct importing hehe. Since then they have risen in price to a pint where I'm not interested.

As a get-me-out-of-trouble tyre, I fitted Toyo Trampio's a few weeks ago. I was expecting total garbage considering the $310 price tag for a 265/35 18, but I am well impressed! I honestly can't beleive how good they are for the dollars! Wonder how much Tempe could do them for smile.gif

Just remember, the more it grips, the less power you get out of it! :-)
Conversely, the less it grips, the less power you get out of it! (Who would have thought?) :-)

Because the longer your route (within limits) the faster average speed you can maintain. That's why F1's and rally car's take the longest route through the corner.

so drifting at alsight angel si faster thru a corner.. i can understand... but at full angle its not..

when working at mallala i see the go karts drifting turn 7 alot they are very fast the 250CC super karts lap quick thena the V8s

indeed but I was stirring oldschoolie

I had in mind the driver that slows to 2km an hour b4 the corner and then swins left wide into the other lane b4 turning right -while resting their chin on the stering wheel
seat bolt upright and as far forward as possible

Drifting at all, is not fast! So of course drifting at a greater angle wouldn't be faster, since you can't maintain as much speed, your maximum speed without traction is reached faster. You never want to lose traction, watch the F1s and V8 super cars, they don't like losing traction!

If your tyre grip's too much your not going fast enough, or your car isn't powerful enough. So you would either change your tyre's or put your foot down more! And the less it grips also the less power you get... well that's a no brainer. You need to find a good medium, of tyre height, grip and width.
DeL
i got a crnched syncro in my gear box 3rd back to 2nd at mid/high revs i find at mallala coming into turn 5/7 (after the two starights) it crunches so i find down changing to third brake late just before apex of corner slot back to second turn n accelerate out no crunch... 2 other corners that id usually use 2nd gear on i just carry third at slightly higher speeds but with out the punch out of the corner of high revving second.
