depending on the car, the auto can be fuel efficient because of how it changes the gears..

I prefer the manual due to the shear control you get out of the car, you can engine brake, your brakes are more responsive, acceleration is better, keeps you awake also laugh.gif

I am leaning towards an auto atm though due to the amount of driving I do. Like DelusionL, I have manual and auto cars, and I do get the urge to just jump into the ute (auto) and go for a relaxing drive (in a way, no power steering)..

maunal all the way!!!!!!, i have had auto, and i was itching to get back in a manual

oh yeah, regarding the auto, wouldn't mind an auto and then manualising it, that would be fun to drive smile.gif

Manuals to autos are no difference in speed. Chuck the same cars along side each other like a brand new commy, one manual one auto you would find that there is no real difference its just that manual feels quicker as you are changing the gears.
Getting into a high stall car with a shift kit is fun. Getting chirpys outa gears nice. Whne your drag racing you want a auto but when circut racing all the way manual.
I have a 4WD Turbo Nissan and she is manual (actuall 4X4) you need them for when your in the sand mud rocks etc. Just the other week i was stuck in a river at Lonsdale and needet to get ripped out. But its nice to just hop in a car lay back and cruise. Especially in peak hour traffic. Luckily i live 10 mins away from work and dont have that problem.
You cant push start autos, you can tow them at high speed if you break down as you will cook the clutchs in them. Only way to tow a auto say at 40+ is to take the tail shaft out. Autos are heavier due to the stall converter and taking so much oil.
Even tho i learnt in a auto I taught my self to drive a manual. I think the law should be like in W.A if you learn in a auto you should drive a auto but if you learn in a manual you can drive both. This been due to hills starts, stalling etc.... But if anyone who sez thay cant drive a manual well there not trying hard enough! Once you work out the clutch your fine. My mates wife had to learn in his 300Z V6 twin turbo with a real hard clutch and she picked it up in a day or two. I have mates that wont even try. Thay just need the confidence. Easy as!

manuels but i dont know about this keep you awake thing...should you be driving if your tired in the first place? because theres no difference between a manual and a auto if your driving long distance
smp971
maybe not necessarily keep you awake, just more focused on the job at hand!!! wink.gif

I learnt how to drive in an auto, but about two years later learnt in a manual and I will never go back....

In the city i spose it would keep you concetrating but on the highway theres no difference. Memba people drowsy drivers die! Let some one else drive if your tired.

absolutely...in total agreeance with you there Harley! I meant that driving a manual keep you focused on the road, and all that is around you, more...I have a friend who drives autos, and she scares the hell out of me coz all she has to do is press the stop/go pedal which she seems to think frees her up for fiddling with the radio, smoking, talking to people in the back seat (head fully turned too), doing her makeup...scary Mary!!! But she won't get a manual coz it would be too hard for her..needless to say I don't/won't drive with her too much...white knuckle fever!!! ha ha wink.gif

I just think auto's are suited to larger engine cars more than the smaller

Haha, cruise control...

Jonesy's first Magna was converted from Auto to Manual, it was an Elante edition Magna, so it had cruise control. When you set the cruise control and then hit the initiate button, didn't matter what gear it was in, it would rev the fuck out of it to 'get the car up to speed'...or so the car thought. Whoever did the conversion, didn't do the full job, it was funny having cruise control set to 100 and initiating it in 1st gear..vvvvrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrghghghghghghghh-bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh laugh.gif

manual hands down... more control, can play with it more.. imo, if u want straight line speed... auto, plus if you're running turbo theres less lag... i dont like the way auto's kick back gears or the way they change forward either. The revs gimme the shits all the time... there's alot more to it but i CBF sexplaining it all so...

It really depends on what you do with your car? huh.gif

I drive a manual for running around in, but a few years ago when I had to drive from Adelaide to Sydney and back at least once a month, F@$K going without cruise control. and I have yet to see a manual with it.

manual all the way, that way you dont get bored while driving and are forced to do other things instead (smoking grrrr sad.gif ). You use less fuel aswell especially in the city.

Manuals all the way for learning to drive... i think its better to learn the hardest first and then work out an easier way to do it...
i lovingly remember learning the manual...
first time in the old green bush basher on the farm, 12 years old... dad standing outside the window directing me on how to get into first gear and take off... stalling... dad returning and telling me how to get into first gear... dad steps away... i manage to get into first and take off... turning the wheel... dad's running up to the driver side door telling me to stop the ute... i stall... and wonder why he's freaking out... dad, while slightly out of breath, tells me i just did a giant slow donut in the field and we're going to have to go drive over it a few times or the big boss will freak out himself...

hahaahahahaahahhah classic! so that was 40c for 2 stalls and my first donut!
i think i ended up paying day a few dollars before i mastered the art of driving...

and now if i get into an auto, when i hear the engine get to the changing point im still determined to chage gears! but i do like driving auto in the city...

I learnt on Auto, and have driven only that so far.

To be honest sometimes I muse with the idea of buying a manual car - it'd make driving more interesting while learning it, and there'd be a little more control over the power thats going to the wheels, etc.

I'm cool with auto - nice, lazy driving smile.gif

Jutsin, I'm gonna move to auto soon as I'm too lazy to bother with manual, and to be honest, in peak hour, its more of a pain than a joy.. start and stopping is annoying. if I do find the car I want in manual, I wont walk away though, I'll just put up with peak hour manual driving for another 3 yrs..

its sooo much cheaper to maintain a manual too, no annual transmission fluid changes like on an auto..

unless you find yourself next to a worked Turbo 6 or those pocket rocket EVOs and WRX which also have seen some "minor" mods.. V8s sound awesome, but in the end, power to weight ratio has never been in their favour, well, not for the typical aussie sedan..

i've only had manual cars and find it rather strange driving in an auto when there is that pause before the transmission kicks back a gear, especially when you need the power NOW not in 3 seconds. i like to drive my cars as i want to, not neccessarily as the auto trans wishes.

Manual is great, both my cars are manual, but my brothers auto R31 goes really hard.. so I dont really know what to think anymore.
I enjoy driving a manual, the exhaust note is much nicer as you gear down etc, and it gives you more to do then just steer/brake/accelerate.

People tend to think of automatic as the old technology.. slow acceleration, power loss, etc... auto transmissions have come a long way, but are still boring to drive.
Ive owned autos and I dont really want another one.
So my vote goes manual for more fun smile.gif

I love my manual cars, especially my 4 cyl maual cars are so light and so much fun. Some people love the sound of a hot V8 and so do i bit i prefer to drive a 4cyl Turbo manual. There is nothing like the shove in tha back as your turbo spools up, your wheels break traction and away you go. Then change into 2nd blowoff valve BARSHHHHHH more wheelspin. Oh what fun it is to drive a single turbo fuel injected sleigh.

Autos do have their uses.

Like when you driving at about 3 kph (not stop / start, just very very slow all the time) north along the east side of Darling Harbour in Sydney heading up the long steep onramp onto the bridge.

In my manual rx8 with a heavy clutch, it was extremely hard going. An auto would have been nice there.

I've never seen a car slide sideways so easily. (ah those were the days, fun times. lol smile.gif )

But yeh manuals all the way, you have more control over the car.

I brought my car as an auto its a eb s2 ford falcon I had it changed over to a manual about a year and a half ago. in that time i have had to replace part of the fire wall because the clutch cable pulled throught it and left a big hole. The person i got to fix it Simax engininring put a plate ocer the hole so that my clutch cable was pulling through on a 45 degree angle. i just got the cable fixed when the clutch plate wore down to the pot riverts so i had a heavy duty extream race clutch put in in and havent had a problem since now it goes really well. so even with all the problems i prefer manuals just upgraded ones laugh.gif

.....as far as aural excitment a 4 speed strait cut crash box', no clutch on the way up, double clutch on the way down......

learn in an auto, the last thing you want to worry about while you're trying to learn how to drive and how to drive with other people on the road is gears. i honestly urge ALL new drivers to start in an auto until you are competent on the roads - by competent i don't mean can drive to the shops more that you can drive in to town, park your car and get back out again in peak time...

which is more fuel efficient - auto's - though when you put you're foot flat all cars suck a lot of juice! auto's will choose the most efficent, not always the best, gear for the speed and incline they face.

man, i can eat macca's and accelerate from a standing start while turning around a corner right in front of a cop shop tongue.gif don't recommend it...

in a big car i'd prefer an auto just for the comfort cruise factor but any other day of the year gimme a manual - provided it's not too dodgey... having lived in the hills all my life the advantages to manuals are noticed more so, you can set yourself up for corners better plus you have more direct control of the power going to the wheels. manuals can make you a better driver but only if you were a good driver to start with, and in all seriousness it takes the better side of 4 to 5 years to be fully profficient in a manual - to the level that the people in the car with you would think you drive an auto... wink.gif

one thing that makes me nervous is people who keep always have one hand on the wheel and one one the stick, the only time you should take your left hand off the wheel is to either change gear or carress the thigh of the lovely girl who's sitting in the passenger seat... end of story tongue.gif

I brought my car as an auto its a eb s2 ford falcon I had it changed over to a manual about a year and a half ago. in that time i have had to replace part of the fire wall because the clutch cable pulled throught it and left a big hole. The person i got to fix it Simax engininring put a plate ocer the hole so that my clutch cable was pulling through on a 45 degree angle. i just got the cable fixed when the clutch plate wore down to the pot riverts so i had a heavy duty extream race clutch put in in and havent had a problem since now it goes really well. so even with all the problems i prefer manuals just upgraded ones laugh.gif

best to learn i an auto.. have your licence.. and go from there... (which what i did,... my amzing story.. below) but yes.. if your a fast learner... then get into the manual right at the start. but doing the P's test is a lot easier in an auto... esp starting on a hill, etc! hehe

My amazing driving story! hehe:
I got my learners first time... studied like hell.. so got full marks... aww.. damn.. me so so proud!!! hehe... the funny thing was tho... we didnt have a car... so i had to renew my L's once before i had saved up enough money for lessons!! so i took in as much as i could when i had my first lesson, which was in an auto!! hehe. My first lesson was scary as. i got behind the wheel.. drove off... and my teacher was like.. wow... how long you been driving?? i was like... um.. about a minute... this is my first time. so he was like.. oh yes.. lets go onto the main road.. whoch is bloody three lanes... on the verge of freaking out... i somejhow managed it... and drove without crashing into anyone... sigh... so so scared.. but hey... you dont get anywhere if you never take risks i guess

Two days later or sumthing... my next one hour lesson and he was like.. yes.. your progressing along nicely... in the meantime.. im shaking and toightly grasping the wheel!!! hehe. but yes.. the 4th lesson came along... and i was already starting to be a lot mmore confident... and got my first taste of speeding whilst driving down a hill. hehe... oops... 90km/hr in a 60 zone... hehe back in those days.. there wasnt 50 zones yet!! damn i feel old.

but yes.,.... on my 6th lesson.. he was like.. ok.. i;ll book you in for a test.. i was like... umjm... ive only had 6hours of driving in my life... umm.. help.... so i had the next four .. so only ten hours driving (10 lessons) in total.. went for the p's test and got it!! mid 90's range.. like 96% i think!! i was like wow... hehe.. then i never drove... or maybe once i drove... before i got my full lisence when i turned 19!! hehe... i remeber the day i got my full lisence... i went to work and told my work mates.. and they were like ...wow?? what did you have to do??? and i was like.. turn 19!! hehe!! poor peeps that have such a rigmoral to go thru to get their licence now-a-days!!!

I can drive properly now.. im no longer scared... been driving so many peeps cars.. manuals too... hehe.. friends get drunk.. i dont usu drink that much.. so drive em home!! w00t!! theres my story!!! long winded? i know.. dont have to read it! hehe

yeah i learnt in a auto... even though i had manual experience in the form of a motobike, i just didn't wanna touch a manual. wasn't until after i got off my P's, and work was giving me a ford courier ute to drive to pt augusta and back, which is a manual. so a week before that i tought myself at home on the property in the little suzuki, which then grew on me, so i got that on the road smile.gif

my hand is always on the gear stick... just one of my habits... even if it is a auto, i still drive damn auto like its a manual laugh.gif unless i goin thru tight shit, where both hands are needed.

the SS way....

i learnt in an auto, never having driven a manual before.
did my 6 hrs off driving tests passed everything, thent eh driving instructor said to me " sorry we didint get time ina manual but since u drive one all the time already i didint think we woudl need ot worry"

i owned an auto....

3 months later i bought a torana 50km away from where i lived. and taught myself how to drive on that 50km stretch of open highway...

luckily enuff im a competent driver, and pick things up very easily.

that and driving the odl auto family car since i was 12... so driving was never an issue.

doing my MR truck licence my instrcutor was suitably impressed enuff to make our 'final drive' not just round the regency area.. instead in morning traffic at 8am.. down thru north adelaide thru king william st out other side up free way off at eagle on the hill up free way up to my lofty and then back down old green hill road.

NOW THAT tested out the limits of control on a guy that had only really driven trucks for 4hrs.... tongue.gif

PASSED with almost 100% in all areas..

now.. i race my car at mallala in the regularity class, and compete in motorkhanas when i get the chance to aswell.

Manual by choice for pure driving pleasure..

auto for work and city driving

and scooter.. auto bike.. fun biggrin.gif

The first time I drove a manual I got thrown the keys to the work van (in my old job) and told to drive accross the city to make a delivery in half an hour. It was O.K I only had one accident and second gear syncro was never the same again.....lol.....

In my current job I had to do a lot of work in the art of Italian manual gearboxes (think Italian women...like dealing with my Girlfriend), crash boxes and gearboxes that never worked to start with :S

Still I wish I could convert my day to day car back to auto....*sigh*

have to say, manual is definitely more fun at times, but once u get a shift kit and high stall converter in an auto itle accelerate faster than the manual, u get the control of a manual albeat minus the engine breaking bit, and when u want u can cruise, and finally i know with my falcon the auto will handle a lot more power than the manual in stock trim which means i can focus more on the engine tongue.gif and less on the transmision. plus im lazy and CBF chaning my car over from auto to manual
Bexter
A manual is more fun, but an auto is easier in peak hour traffic... and hills.

Manuals are way better.
Nothing worse than having a flat battery in an auto and not being able to roll start it.

Would have to go with the whole manual thing, i drove an auto in the work ute and was bored out of my brains in traffic.

So manual wins for me smile.gif
waylander_jobby
still have to stick with the auto, which soon will be manualized. the kick down in a modern auto is alright just have to have ur tranny software flashed so it shifts hard and quickly. mates auto transmision shifts so hard and fast it kicks the car sidewards. and yea if i was driving a small displacement car definitly manual, since they dont have the torque to make use of the autos abilities.
Aska
Manual is the only way to go!
Better control in the hills ....and no boring driving in the city smile.gif
