Interview with FLIP live by Oldskoolie.I recently caught up with early 90s live act FLIP (aka Jason Littler). I took the opportunity to throw a small interview together to give you new kids an insight into a live act from the old days, and the old kids, a memory awakenizer
Enjoy,

When did you first start producing dance orientated music?
Started fiddling I guess when at Sound Engineering College with a borrowed Juno 106 in the early 80's with a mate called Lee Montaverde who went on to produce the Urban Cookie Collective.
What or Who were your influences.
My influences were 80's Electrofunk. Listening to Manchester DJs such as Greg Wilson. I have kind of been with Dance Music ever since those days. I was lucky enough to catch up with Greg recently & share some mixes. He produced (and managed) Broken Glass's "Style of the Street" on the UK Electro which was recently revamped by Liam Howlett's track "Girls" on his new Prodigy album "Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned". Later on it had to be Liam but I was blown away with Mike Wells as Force Mass Motion. Awesome tunes.
What in your own words drives your creativity?
It has always having a desire to go out there and do something positive, something creative. Once you get the bug, you can't stop. I hardly have time but somehow find it for a quick spin on Final Scratch or a fiddle with Ableton Live.
Have you ever considered shaving a parrot.
I once had a Parrot named Peter which was given to me as a gift one Christmas when I lived in Manchester. He came with a record which you played over and over again to try to teach it to talk. I think it was an early Hip Hop track. He never talked and the razor looked promising.
What are some of your most memorable performances?
I guess my Debut with DAMC at Camelot Castle, but Colossus at the Entertainment Centre was amazing. I also remember playing a NYE event for Paul Hodder in the old Le Rox car park. I was onstage just preparing my keyboards. HMC was on the decks when suddenly all the power went out. All I saw was this flicker from a lighter from behind the decks and Camello's eyes and a curious grin. "Was that you who did that Flip?" he said. Luckily it wasn't me and the problem was rectified quickly. Now what do you do as a DJ when you've lost the crowd due to a power failure? Camello carefully placed a sacred piece of vinyl on the decks and cued up. The crowd erupted. The track? Joey Beltram's Energy Flash. Joey was a real inspiration in my early days of producing and I was privileged to tour with him. I remember him spraying a piece of graffiti along the wall outside the Big Ticket once.
Did you have a favourite venue in Adelaide?
Le Rox has always been my mecca before I actually performed there with Grooverider, which made the whole experience even more memorable. The Old Lion was wicked too. I loved playing Heaven with its wonderful light show & Sound System.
When and where was your first set?
My first Live set in Adelaide was at Excalibur.
Were you nervous?
I was more hyped and curious. I wondered how the crowd would react. As the first track started the crowd instantly warmed to it, went nuts and the rest is history.
What are some of your more embarrassing moments?
DAT machines stopping during performances have to be up there, blowing bass bins in Melbourne, but the best has to be passing out behind the decks at Cartoons due to something they call Beer. Luckily Phasey was there to save the day. Quick as a flash he was up there and finished off my set for me.
What do you do in your spare time?
Well my work is cut out for me now my son has been born, but I’m busy working on some new trance tracks at the moment which I hope to submit to Trance Tribe here in Sydney. I have a few projects up my sleeve but the big thing is Spare Time. I enjoy watching a good movie with my wife. Watching Manchester United on the telly. Believe it or not I love gardening & cooking.
What do you miss the most about Adelaide.
I do miss my friends, my DJ colleagues, but mostly the Vibe of Adelaide is unique. Luckily I get to keep in touch thanks to the Web and listening to Fresh online.
Would you come back to play in the future?
We had hoped that both DAMC and I could have returned for a back to back set at the last anthems party held at the Ark, but unfortunately it didn't eventuate due to prior commitments. Hopefully early next year we may be able to work something out.
Finally I just wanted to thank everyone who has supported me over the years and although I haven't released anything for 6 years, I'm not dead and buried and am currently working hard to get some new material out there.
