We wanna hear from people who were cranking when we were in nappies...

definitely a much friendlier environment back then. Nowadays everyones a bit cautious.
Davin
Plus Heaven and St Pauls have a totally different vibe. It's hard to compare actually

I've found that where ever I go, people seem stuck-up a bit. Not too sure that the venue is a contributing factor. You see a lot of the mainstream crowd crossover to events held where ever and some of the hardcore rave set going to the mainstream.

more than anything it's YOURSELF that changes much more than the shows...

your:

1. point of view
2. reasons for going
3. attitude towards others

it's like reading a book again after 5 years... you take different things away from it because you've had 5 more years of life experience!

I would have to say that i have seen a lot of changes throughout the years. Rave formats/styles, music (always evolving), the people both punters and DJs.

The older parties tended to play a huge varitey of types of music. Would start early with the house and progress through to hardcore at the end of the night.
these days i've found the parties are very focused around one or two genres of music.

With this in mind i've also found that the majority of people are arriving much later. Usually getting there around the time the internationals are playing.

Venues are much more restricted these days. Would love to see different locations being used for parties...however i do understand the politics involved in establishing a venue from scratch, licencing etc.

People these days are mixed. there are the friendly types who don't care what you look like, how you dance, what you wear....and then there are the people who look are you strangely as if 'who are you and why are you here?? type look...this is my world and why are you, an old person, invading it?? Don't like that attitude when they have no idea who i am.

Ok, i admit that i have changed too. Im older, wiser and my experiences are different from anyone else. I don't dwell on the past but i do enjoy revisiting emotions and memories of the past which are linked to great tracks from the years gone by.

Thats so true. I've forgotten about alot of things now. Alot of punters are more focused on seeing internattys than giving support to the local crew as well. I almost forgotten that I've aged a bit now and don't realise that until someone points it out.

Heya Guys and Gals.

Yeah the parties were different but not necessarily better...

Heaven had this vibe about it when an anthems party was on, i dunno what caused it or exactly what it was!! Ppl also seemed much friendlier

And ppl have to remember the crossover crew that went to EVERYTHING held at heaven back in the day so the place was always full to capacity!!!

i fully agree with that!! but i have found that most rave style parties ive been to everyone has been super friendly helping out complete strangers etc havnt noticed too many of the "selfish" type people...

talking about heaven these days as for generic nights on saw a saturday, looks like theres people that go there to just start shit...wish the attitude from the above could be carried around everywhere

Im 21 - and never went to any of the old venues - I love my old skool music - not because I heard it when I was young (I was only 10 when dreamer by Livin Joy was released!) but because I appreciate the genre - and like the style.
I certainly wish I could have been clubbing when these tracks were played every single week!

I wish heaven would have a completely old skool saturday night in the main room - thatd be a lot of fun.

It's true that anthems used to go right off when it was held at heaven, it's had a wicked vibe and the place would pack out hard, but..

the feeling i got as I ascended the stairs at anthems @ the ark, it was like I was stepping straight back in time to '92-'93. I couldn't wipe the stupid grin off my face..

I was almost expecting ATB's usual 11'oclock warmup set..

and the UZI express, (used to pull in at 4:00)!

but the night didn't dissapoint at all!

it is always great to see a heap of old heads crawl out from hibernation for the anthems shows, and refreshing to see an element of young'uns who have developed an appreciation for sound of the old school.

it's true, the vibe can change.. but the vibe is all about the people..

that's why anthems rocks ! :plur: smile.gif

I had the same feelings when i walked up those stairs too. I couldn't stop smiling and had to explain to my wife, who had never been in the place before, just exactly what was going through my head.
Being able to relive the night that Westbam played over and over again in my head is priceless. I met Max that day at centrals (the old twin street address) and watched him play a couple of trax. Had a quick chat and said see ya tonight at the gig. He recognised me across the dance floor, waved and gave me a thumbs up which i returned....what a night! Would love to see the ark filled to capacity again for another anthems. the vibe at the contravercial '96 arkabar reunion was mind blowing for those who managed to stay inside all night. for those who left to get a bit of fresh air....not many of you made it back in.
Amy
I wasnt around for any of the old parties.. but just the stories I hear and the passion that is behind it all makes me so envious of those of you who were around to experience it all... I love the music, love the atmosphere, and love the people that come along to the anthems parties.. and cant wait to get to the next one!!!!!

Personally I think the older parties were better...the people were more honest and more friendly!

The vibe now has changed quite a bit and people tend to be more a little bit more superficial and stand offish!

The good old days back in heaven were good. Everyone was friends with everyone so it made the whole party experience better!

No doubt there would be people on this forum who I have partied with before!

It was all good!

Anna.. I don't think you're taking into accout how much you've changed over the years.

I've been around for many 'clubber life-cycles' and it's the individuals go thru a several distinct phases... not the events!

people get more and more sketchy over the years and become a little more... well, sketchy.. jokes..

no i think society in general is alot more superficial and up-tight and fashion concience these days, in comparison to early 90`s etc.

Iv been going to Heaven a fair bit lately - as i did back in 98, 99 almost every week and even then the place had a wikid vibe about it, so much more happy. These days, theres an abudance of ego`s and skantily clad women. Wheres the big tales and the glow wear!!!
Best thing to do is to arrive later, get happy/offtap, wait for the drinkers to head home and wait for the decent/better music to start.

i think a Rave - in its truest form will always have that loved up- friendly vibe about it. Im always, and so are many other people, offering a drink of water to the person cranking next to ya on the dance floor. its community, its one of the best fuking parts about being in this scene!

in saying that.. i get stupidly loved up on a good night so watch out smile.gif
tangent23
it was funny going to the anthems at the ark recently, there were faces there i hadn't seen since going to the ark back in the day, and we'd be looking at each other going ! biggrin.gif..

re: friendliness etc, remember also these days it's more 'mainstream' to go clubbing so there are going to be more people out who don't really understand the vibe, or see the specialness in it.. but then it's up to us that do to help them into the fold wink.gif

like i said in another thread, back at the beginning you had to make an effort to find out about and get to the parties/clubs, so it was naturally more a common bonding experience, especially in comparison to the alternatives on offer at the time, and no media coverage except in the venerable Core or from import UK mags..

now that's it's a much larger market, there is a greater cross-section of the community where it's not such a lifestyle than just something that you do on the weekends and long weekends.

i mean how many clubbers these days would make the effort to go out 4-5 nights a week?

i think it's just a different mentality, neither better or worse, just progression into different forms i guess..

to get slightly technical, most of us oldies would be classified as X gens, which according to some generational reports are more independent than those older [more authority based] or younger [more tribal], which paradoxically it would seem may have led us to be more cohesive as a group of 'individuals', this whole culture being about expression of the true self [i believe].. wheras the newer generation may still be keeping to their tribe mentality [ie not mixing with others out of their tribe as easily]..

hehe anyway, i'm rambling now so i'll stop. biggrin.gif

I totally fogot about that going on ... you wouldn't see this happening these days.
I recall occasionally even buying a water for someone I didn't know and sometimes total strangers doing the same smile.gif

I would have to agree with paul on this, it is not the events that change, it is the clubber that changes. In the old days Heaven was the place to be because there was not much else on the scene at the time, so it would always get the crowds. The atmosphere was second to none, because ppl generally wanted to be there. Nowdays it is all about what you can take and how much of it, rather than who is playing, and where. i think the raving culture has taken a side road somewhee and forgotten what ravin was all about. Peace Love and Unity. None of this selfishness, or dodgy ppl, or dodgy lollies. Some of my best experiences would have to been in the early years of my ravin career, but not all. The events that always stick in my mind are the ones where ppl are all in one state of mind (ravin) and just enjoying the tunes and appreciating the DJs. Peoples standards and expectations are just far to high, it is no wonder why ppl say the scene is not what it was. they are expecting something to much that they forget to enjoy the event.

My two cents anywayz

I've got to the bar on maybe occations..purchase half a dozen bottles of water and headed back to the dance floor. Wanna make 5 new friends.. just had them out to the people around you dancing away...

Small price to pay for making a new friend or two!

I reckon that many a rave is about the state of mind you are in. I know that reminiscing puts a nice hazy glow on most of these events.
I have been to a few dance parties many years ago that were really good, but i have also experienced my fair share of crappy ones as well back then. I have also been to some more recently that were wikkid so its not jsut about old skool versus new skool

well thats my "rave" for tonight anyway

With the way things are shaping up, I'll be keen to re-read this thread on June 14 smile.gif

I think it was the excitement of not knowing where the whole journey was going, the newness of the whole experience that is lost now. Even if people haven't experienced it themselves these days. they've read about it, their friends have done it or they've seen it in the movies. The vibe and the closeness that you felt to everyone, even if you never even spoke to them, came from all being in it together. I think you had mentioned earlier T23, that if you saw someone in the mall from LeRox, the Metro or the Ark, you couldn't stop grinning at each other.

I have not been to an anthems party in over (scary thought) 8 years now, so I cant really comment on the parties now, but back when I was out partying (90 - 93/4) were some of the best years of my life! I loved everything about them, the people, the music, the vibe.
In sydney, we had so many different parties back then, it was the best!
I remember going to raves at the hordon pravillion, old warehouses, homebush and not worrying about anything.
The DJs had such passion then, really got the crowds going!
DeLr
only been to recent ones... loved them. so much better than club nights etc.

keep em coming.. and in 10 yrs or so. id like to be able to look back and say similer things as have been voiced in this thread...

The main difference is that back in the day, there were no "anthems" parties. The music was new. Garage and English Hardcore became Jungle became Drum and Bass and then fragmented into tech-step,darkside,intelligent,musical,hardstyle etc. House music was busy turning into progressive or deep or tribal. Hardcore gabber burst onto the scene. It was all new.

The only anthems were classic tracks from the Disco and Electro era : Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", and Blue Monday and early underground resistance.

Anthems were in the making by artists such as Njoi and the Prodigy and Jeff Mills etc. We probably didn't know or care at the time that there would be nostalgic "anthems" parties celebrating the early years of rave in Adelaide.

During the peak : Heaven was the door to the scene, Discovery was the filthy sweaty backroom and your ticket to the underground parties in the hills (fruit of the gods, Bob, Excalibur etc.).

The main thing was that people were there for the music, and the "scene" rode along on that concept. Now, it is the "scene", and quite often the music seems secondary. Maturity and popularity will do that though ...

the first anthems...... huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge. havent been to one since 1998-99 so i cant compare.

i died when i missed arkaba anthems (i was in tasmania for that weekend). if it was like ark reunion or even old skool ark, it would have been mega huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge.

Get along to one soon then g.k. Even if for now it's Venus at the Ark!

back to the topic at hand, there is big difference and the sands of time have mostl to do with it.

the newer generations walked into a matured and established culture, whereas the old skoolers around here were the pioneers. that makes it a lot different from all perspectives. the older crowd are more 'possessive'.

secondly i think one of the biggest changes are the internet and mobile phones. they were barely around until mid 90's. people communicate outside the venues and at home, whereas in the old days you would be more in person.

thirdly, media, cops and laws have changed a lot. no more nos bulbs on the dancefloor! not as many one of warehouse venues like the old days either.

jase31r
yes , i agree , thats the crux of it wink.gif
