Police are investigating a wild sex and drug "rave" party at the Old Adelaide Gaol.

Several drug dealers were detected at the party, which was attended by up to 1500 ‘ravers’ as young as 14. The party’s promoter is being investigated by police and the Liquor Licensing commission after the manic night in which:
smile.gif THIRTEEN men were reported for drug dealing and one man was arrested for assaulting police.
smile.gif TWO partygoers were rushed to hospital after collapsing, either from dancing exhaustion or the effects of drugs.
smile.gif A NEEDLE-exchange room was set up for the heroin users.
smile.gif ABOUT 20 candle lit ‘chill out’ rooms with pillows and mattresses were set aside for the revellers inside the building.
smile.gif TWO CONDOMS were handed to each raver who entered the party.
smile.gif ONLY four security guards were employed to control the huge crowd.

Last night, police said they were ‘concerned’ about the party and the wide-spread use of drugs. Cannabis and the so-called love drugs ecstasy and amyl-nitrate were found inside the jail. Cylinders of nitrous oxide, which is inhaled to give a ‘rush’ but can sometimes blow out front teeth, were found littered on roads surrounding the building. STAR division, Adelaide and Hindley street police and liquor licence inspectors joined a combined raid on the party, which finished about 5am on Friday. Some of the 13 men reported for possessing or selling drugs were believed to be offering drugs to partygoers before they entered the jail. Partygoers had paid $30 each for tickets to ‘The Australia Day Party’. The officer-in-charge of Hindley Street Police, Inspector Jim Langmead, said last night possible links between the party and other recent ‘rave’ parties were being investigated to determine whether ‘ the same organisers are setting them up’ He said police were gathering intelligence in a bid to uncover a suggested underground network of organisers and ravers to determine time and locations of future parties. Preliminary reports indicate tickets for the parties are being sold at selected Adelaide record shops. Inspector Langmead said the widely signposted needle exchange at the party promoted drug use. "I am concerned it give the wrong message to partygoers - it gives the message that if you come here it’s okay to use and inject," he said. " and they (needles) can be used as weapons."
Investigations by THE ADVERTISER have revealed the promoter was granted a $22 limited liquor licence for the party. The Old Adelaide Goal , which closed in 1988 after 147 years in service, is under the control of the state heritage branch of the Environment and Natural Resources Department. It is used as a museum and is often hired out to the public for parties and functions. The Liquor Licensing Commissioner, Mr Bill Pryor, said the party promoter would be investigated to determine whether the application - which used the name of a top class Adelaide establishment - was misleading. It is believed the commission thought the Australia Day party would involve bush bands and a family show. "We will be considering action against them", Mr pryor said. "We will look at it and maybe the answer is coming down hard on them.

What the...? I never heard anything about this, thought news like this would have been well well known, like EF7 last year being all over the television.

I think a anthems party should be at the gaol in the future, ive never been but mates say the venue ain't too bad.

That article was years old wasn't it? Never knew about the Nos though, explain that to your friends "I got attacked by a deadly cream gun"

A lot of you wouldn't have heard about this article, as it's 10yrs old. It was talking about the last party held a there, so don't hold your breath waiting for another one!

This is a journolistic style know as "never the let the truth get in the way of a good story", and "how to turn a safe sex msg and a needle safety campaign into a negative story".
bj9999r

wow - that sounds like a big night - i would have LOVED to have been old enought back then to go to a rave at the jail - it is such a dramatic setting, and it would have been crazy.

Oh well, I guess after a review like that nobody would dare hire the place out for a dance party!

I remember that article... inspired me to go to Ultraworld 5 - my first rave.

Pretty sure too Dav that there was an Ultraworld at the jail with Marky, Slipmatt and Marco Bailey since that one. Be getting back about 2 years ago.

The rave was ultraworld 4 and it was a huge night. Its amazing how the press can twist the truth into a headlining story!! If i remember correctly, one of the people arrested for selling drugs was an off duty policeman...now we never heard much about that did we?!?!? hmmmm!
PaulHamonr
I was there I had a great night... I was 1996... I believe??? anyone...
This think I've still got my news papar BANNER sheet took from out the front of the local DELI when I saw it!

I was at the Rally... Natasha Stott Despoja spoke at the rally supporting US!
And MC Pab got a parking ticket for leaving is car out the front of Parliment House in a No Standing Zone.

What a day...

You remember perfectly. The cop who was arrested for dealing at Ultra 4 was discharged from the force. After that he continued to frequent the rave scene for quite some time.

It has been three years since Ultra 21 (the Homecoming) and I reckon that we are well overdue for a jail rave. Every show I have been to at the jail has rocked:

Inquest, Fortress of Bass, Ultra 1, On a Harder Tip (200+ club)

Would be well wicked to have another jail party, it's possibly the best venue for a rave in inner Adelaide! oh! ...r.i.p Vision Warehouse

The Vision warehouse is now storage right? I haven't looked, but I'm guessing it's the small cubicle type storage an no good for a rave?

was a great day smile.gif
Oldskoolier
Ultraworld 4 was probably one of the best ever parties i have been to. I spent most of the night in the cellblock, and when i did venture outside all i could here was MC Ribbs telling everyone that the boys in blue had shut the party down....

Was an excellent evening!

I even remember i was wearing white cord and blue denim scarab jeans and my gf's astroboy t-shirt. And the fluffy bunny crew were there with their fluffy jumpsuits with fluffy backpacks sewn into them (freex).

Anyone have any photo's from the night?
djkarnager
that was a cool night. remember that article. always wondered how off tapyou'd need to be to blow out your front teeth with nos!
Oh my god dont inhale drugs you might lose a tooth!
Seem to recall that the needle exchange collected only a few needles like twenty or something and at a rock concert the same people collected about 100 needles from a party that was half the size!
Never heard about that in the papers though.
Oldskoolier
Thats shit! Typical media bandwagon bullshit, out to hurt anything new and exciting for the youths of today.

I think its about time we all band together and start a media of our own that reports about the media and their fuck-ups.
PaulHamonr
media have been bashing us for years... i think it just shows how small minded Adelaide can be.
Oldskoolier
those were the days!
