I was just reading the "Who Misses Lerox?" topic and it came up that chillout rooms seem to be on the way out at raves. What are peoples thoughts on chillout rooms? Do you like having em or not?

chill out rooms were the best!!! I loved having them there.....I didn't normally spend much time in them, preferring to dance instead, but the times I did spend in there were always 'interesting' times indeed.... wink.gif

BRING BACK THE CHILL OUR ROOMS!!!! biggrin.gif
DeLr
never really experienced them. only seen them in UK movies or o other such cult rave classics..

would be great tho biggrin.gif

When I was doing stuff with eYeCandy at some of the earlier raves, we always managed to get the promoter to cough up for a chillout room + budget for decor. They were pretty cool rooms to hang out in when it all got too much.

Although the whole "sex, drugs, as 1500 go wild at Adelaide Gaol" Advertiser headline almost had the police knocking on my door. Apparently by placing matresses in the cells we were encouraging illicit sex (at a rave, how shocking!) and by pasting up photocopies of Tim Leary's memoirs on the walls we were encouraging drug use (terrible Muriel, you think the cops would be more concerned with the flagrant copyright violation).

CHillout rooms were the ultimate place to meet a bucket load of random new friends. PLUR was usually in abundance, and it gave some contrast to the night. Time to revive them biggrin.gif

definitely.... nothing compliments a great rave quite like a chill out room... where you have comfy places to sit and low lighting.. just some where chilled to sit back and soak it all in!

i want them back too

Lighting deffinately has to be very low, the tents at Enchanted were WAY too bright. Whatever it was called at Shores on Sunday after NYE had a good one but a bit empty of... things. Reminded me of an army field hospital, lighting was perfect tho.

army field hospital eh? u been watching M*A*S*H ? wink.gif

I second that!!! I went to one a million years ago at Lion (before it became the Lion Arts Centre, when it was a condemned building - loads of fun!!!) that had a room with low lighting, heaps of candles, beanbags & massive floor cushions, a hippy DJ spinning very ambient tunes very quietly and people making fresh fruit juice for you. Now THAT was a chill-out room biggrin.gif
melr
chill rooms would be a cool ides if you have the room for it! smile.gif

Having the space is the main issue. The promoters putting on parties nowadays always want to have a side room with a different style of music. Hard dance on the side of a house show, or drum and bass on the side of a hard dance show etc. And places like St Pauls are shitty for the sound leakage from area to area.

I think if you had a decent venue where you could have a chillout area with proper sound proofing, then the punters out there would be happy if there was a DJ in there spinning ambient stuff like sphongle, black dog, aphex twin, board of canada etc. instead of more "throw your hands up in the air" music. Add some spun out fluro art, some non-semen-covered beanbags and a couple of simple lighting effects (oil lamp projector or a slow strobe) and voila! instant chillout area. It wouldn't cost that much to put on, and ambient DJs would work for free tickets most likely.

[my personal favourite chillout room was in a strange warehouse area somewhere under Rundle St east a long time ago (early 1990s) where the room was done to look like Hell (lots of devil images and subdued orange lighting] , and one of the DJs had a huge cauldron of pyschedelic chai tea he was handing out. Probably had about 100 trips or mushroom equivalent mixed in there.]

There was that huge multi-person beanbag that used
to rock up at LeRox a fair bit, and also made it
to Claxton St in Adelaide (when that was raver central)
and various other parties.

It looked great in the dark, but when the black lights
hit it, it wasn't pretty (or maybe it was, if that is
your thing).

lots of memories in that beanbag, does anyone
know what happened to it?

Chillout rooms rock, every rave should have one biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif tongue.gif

Would be great to have some chillout rooms, big soft mattresses, bean bags, and all sorts of cool stuff. Bring em on, sounds awesome.
spacecadetr
not a big fan of chillout rooms as such. If you want to chillout then go outside i reckon. It is good to have a place to chill after a rave though, eg a friends place, if they are extra nice they will let you use their shower biggrin.gif
gemini_starr
chillout rooms are a great idea, ive never been around to experience one but it sounds great. Out sde isn't always an option if its cold out ie the last winter enchanted.
LadyKr
My office would make a good chill out room, well a one person chillout room, ok, my sobering up space- ive been experimenting this morning, theres cushions on the floor, candles, music and i have a bubble blower- mmmm...... so relaxed!!! I just hope my boss doesnt venture down here blink.gif
PrincessPeach1337r
i really like the idea of chillout rooms! as i experienced at one.one this nye, the quasi-chillout room outside was a great way to get back to my plurry roots and the idea of bringing back dedicated chillout rooms would go down very well with me!

only thing though, it'd have to be really well done. that "chillout" room they had set up at the shores for kosheen looked more like a makeshift morgue to me, not very inviting at all!

I found an old picture of the chillout room we did in the little
room off the side of the dancefloor at the Adelaide Uni Boatshed.

It was either soundscape or mindscape, and was taken before
the party opened.

I think that chillout rooms should definatley be a big part in all major raves. I love that you can go to a small room sit around in couches and just talk... take a break from the loud thumping music, while still not missing out on any of the beats.

I am a VERY big fan of chill rooms! BRING 'EM BACK I SAY!!

The name eYeCandy seems to make me think of psy/doof parties...

Did you ever do decor for any of them ddb? Maybe im getting mixed up with something else with an eye/I in it ??

You'd have to be the biggest advocate of the chill room laugh.gif laugh.gif

Yeah, I agree though, there has to be a place to cool down, and chill with your friends for a bit without having to leave the party...
roy13777r
chill-out rooms are a def need as not all people have the stamina to go all night and it's nice to chill for about 5 mins just to get your head together!B)

Yeah, eYecandy was an offshoot of Adrave. Me, Simon Mckenna, Chris Jenkins, Mi(strom) , Nige and Maz (I think), Kat , Jon Crouch (interactive art gallery), Skip and Jen (? I think). And whoever else felt like it at the time.

eYecandy did the decor for a lot of the old Ultraworld parties, including the infamous "sex, drugs as 1500 gold wild at Adelaide gaol" party. The CrowTiser blamed our decor on people taking drugs.

Just because Timothy Leary died a few days earlier and we put a shrine to him in one of the cells ...

The best bit was at the end of one corridor, where they used to hang people. We had a very slow strobe, and on a dark section of the wall that you could only see when the strobe flash, was some writing "People died here".

It was an excellent way to destroy the vibe of some of the people who may have been artificially happy ... cool.gif

You may also remember doofus the dolphin which used to hang above parties. Eventually he was covered in mirror ball segments, so he was a heavy mirror-ball dolphin. Eventually he was stolen ...
