Well I just walked home from North Adelaide, and as I was coming down Torrens Road there was a mega light display....love lightning....so preeeettttttyyyyy biggrin.gif
nickdubr
best one i saw was up in yepoon FNQ, on timothy leary's choice when i was 18, watching the islands light up, whilst listening to fairburn1..great memories.

off topic too, but i love the name yepoon..... heard dave callan on jjj the other evening speaking to a girl from yepoon, asking her "tell us about ye poon? whats in ye poon?"
and she answered " a statue"
he said "do you have a boyfriend?"
she answered "yes"
he said "is he in ye poon too?"
she said "yes"
he said "so there is a statue and your boyfriend in ye poon!!!"

PURE GOLD!!!!!

BACK TO THE LIGHTNING...................

Being in the Grampians we get some pretty awsome storms here, because we are in the middle of the mountains the thunder just echoes( so loud ) on thursday night i saw 6 or 7 forks of lightning come down at once. it looks great biggrin.gif but i think thats what has started the bushfires sad.gif

love them specially summer storms so much lightning!

really charges me up!!
AnGeL^EyEsr
Love storms as well, nothing beats watrching so many lightning bolts in the sky..its amazing!! but not so amazing when your in a plane and lightning hits it its like a ball of fire!!!
Jutsinr
Storms are by far one of my favorite things that I can't watch/do on cue - which makes them all the more sweeter when they happen.

Falling asleep while there's a storm going - or actually sitting outside under our pergola and watching it are top notch smile.gif
Oldskoolier
I love them too! Nothing beeds a dusk storm on the murray. Lightning over sandy red cliffs and water on sunset has to be one of the most beautiful sites electricty can produce!

Rain and storms tend to help me sleep better actually. Not sure why.

I remember growing up in the N.T. I used to live with my grandma in a place called 'Humpty Doo' smile.gif and in the wet season you would get storms that would blow your socks off. So much lightning and thunder, and rain that you just had to run out and play in tongue.gif

Also remember flying up to Darwin once and seeing a storm from above. Massive clouds and streaks of lightning flashing all through them...that was pretty unforgettable.

sailing a 125 ( 2 person dingy) had the kite up, my crew out on trap pushing 35-50knott wind speeds (125s are wind rated to 20-25) Australia day race in port lincoln few(many) yrs ago we had a storm hit badly, thunder and lightning when u have an 18foot peice of aluminium stuck in the sky and steel cables all around you.. FUN FUN FUN!

we had a lightnig strike about 2 boat lenghts in front of us, the static electricity snapped my battons( figerglass strips in the sails to stiffen them) straight thru my sails and shreaded my main sail.

awesome power of nature. it went from dead calm to 35-50 knotts in a matter of minutes. that storm also traveled across the gulf ot devestate adelaide with in an hr of hitting port lincoln whiping out the Heron ( another msall class of yatch) Nationals.

being in the middle of that storm was an awe inspiring feeling, the buzz around you and the hype.

love a storm!

I would have had to change my jocks! ohmy.gif
DeLr
i was in a wet suit.. so anything that required a change of jocks would of been rather messy!

but it was so much fun. we sailed my yatch straight up the beach then bailed back out on a rescue boat to help out. diving of the rescue boat to grab the kiddies from their smaller yatchs and then sail the smaller boats into shore. we had a Mosquito (catermaran) out fo control and wedge itsself under the wharf.

there was 3 boats lost and not found in adelaide from the storm.

such sheer power and ferocity is nothing short of amazing.

but in reailty... its nothing compared to the sydney to hobart races and larger yatch races face.

the storm we hit in the middle of spencer gulf on the Prawn trawler that had us nearly airborn off the lips of waves and then almost submerged when dropping down the face of the waves into the troughs would have to be the most fearful moment of my life. strapped to the deck with saftey harnes's and vomiting from fear/sea sickness in monster seas and storms..

the next day.. dead calm not a cloud in the sky or a breaze in the air..

i think nature just likes to show us who is boss at times..
MagiK_MarKr
I've been out trawling in tassie waters...fuck me! I only did it once to see what my dad does and my god, the waves were literally like what DeL was saying...only it lasted most of the frigging trip smile.gif hahaha anyone up for sea sickness? tongue.gif

I love storms...

I remember (probably about 10 years back) that massive storm that wrecked most of the jetties along the coastline... I was standing at the end of the Henley jetty and the crest of the waves were almost the same height as it...

I love watching the sea during a storm!!
xSketchyxr
Yes sir 2 years back was drivig through the blue mountains, lightning lit up the gullies and the cliffs like pure day light ..man what a sight..........

was also some great flashes last night on the way back from the bay at 3am smile.gif woo! tongue.gif

depends on the storm. i have never been in a REAL bad one... but yeah i love em 2... i keep trying to take a good photo of lightening but not been able to yet :-(
Flamer
ahh Lightning.... one of the most powerful, and beautiful forms of nature.

I love when you out laying on a nice falt field of grass, the time is around the 9- 10 mark, so its getting/is very dark. and then you see a brilliant fork of thunder in the background. then hearing the boom a few seconds after reminds you it was there, and how powerful it was.

i remember driving out to the middle of one of our really open paddocks that was a little way up a hill... parking with the nose of the car pointed towards the mount, and lying on the mattress in the tray of the ute, and just watching the show in 240* vision... was the nicest and most awesome nights - it wasnt cold and it wasnt hot, you didnt need a jumper and it didnt rain... just a nice dry storm - which actually are the more fearsome ones...

infact... that paddock got quite a workout when it was a bright quiet night and you just wanted to get away from the house and star gaze....

... now i want to go back to the farm...
*packs her things*

my dog freaks out during thunderstorms its so cute. she will jump on you and cuddle while shaking. aawww.
LadyKr
I love storms wub.gif i remember watching one over lake alexandrina a few years back- sitting outside dads place wrapping in my sleeping bag- i was so cosy and it was so pretty.
storms scare my dogs though- its very hard enjoying a storm when youve got 3 dogs that the vet makes you give valium to during storms- stress heads sad.gif try chasing a terrorfied dog around and sticking something down its throat- not so easy. theyre still cute though biggrin.gif
KandiRaverr
storms are great, especially with really heavy rain on a tin roof... so soothing!

I remember years ago (when i was a kid) getting chairs and sitting under the verandah in an electrical storm and just watching it. it was beautiful, especially because it was in summer and it was lovely and warm.
crIs Pr
i love queensland for that reason
when i was over there a few years back there was a storm every night biggrin.gif

There's no better storm in Australia than in the tropics...FNQ is pretty good (haven't seen too many in Cairns yet) but Darwin has some kick A**E storms.

Hence the song "This is Australian" something about when thunder and lightening crack over cane fields... biggrin.gif
crIs Pr
and gave me a vegemite.......sandwich..........

love that song!!

off topic? who cares, my thread............
KandiRaverr
cris... wrong song! the one your singing is "Land Down Under" by "Men at Work"!

taz... "This is Australia" by "Midnight Oil" !!
crIs Pr
no not wrong

the line crack over cane fields comes from the men at work song.............

wanna fight??

tongue.gif laugh.gif

i dont.................. *runs away screaming*
KandiRaverr
i beg to differ!! tongue.gif

Men at Work mention thunder, but no carcking of it over cane fields!... we should stop this... i don't want to embarasse you! biggrin.gif
crIs Pr
ok you win i embarrass myself bad enough withou the help of others...........

the cracking over cane fields lyric was by o group called ganggajang (sounds of then) this is australia

we were both wrong biggrin.gif
michr
love storms.. especially summer ones
