I'm not completely certain what the point of this thread will be, so hopefully after typing a little I'll have some direction - just bare with me.
At 3AM on Thursday around the suburban Hindmarsh area one of my best friends died in a car accident .. it has since made me think of several things constantly between then and now ..
Firstly; that road safety is one of those many things we have drilled into us, but the importance is rarely understood until we experience or see the aftermath of a journey gone wrong. The least that anyone can take from this incident, or the numerous others like it - is that we are not invincible, the road (essentially) is not a safe place, and with any amount of travel we do; our very life may depend on the coherent and correct use of whatever vehicle we're operating.
Secondly; let people know how much you appreciate them on a day to day basis. Don't just assume a loved one knows they're loved, or a friend knows they play an important part in your life. Vocalise it. At the very least you will make their day that much brighter, and in the worst case scenario you won't be left wishing you'd explained properly how you felt.
Thirdly; throw petty differences and arguments right out the window. I've seen and had many friendships deteriorate because of the smallest, most ridiculous problems. When you have the chance to apologise or to discuss things maturely .. I know it's normally the last thing on your mind, but try to remember when you no longer have a chance to do either of those .. it's the only thing you can think of.
The latter hits home the most for me in this case.. before I got into anthems and raves, my core friendship group consisted of three people - the guy who died in the accident being one of them. We were best friends for sure, and had all those same inside jokes and hilarity plus experiences than any group has, in fact this very person was the one who gave me the nickname "Jutsin" about two years ago..
..unfortunately when I got into raves the contacts with my old friends deteriorated somewhat, which subsequently made petty differences seem so much more important. In the last few months I spoke to this person very rarely because of said differences. Don't get me wrong; we weren't enemies or some such .. I just never showed the nouse to put the smaller things behind me, or to even voice that he (among others) had played a large role in my life, and his friendship was and always will be much appreciated.
It is mainly for this reason that I'm now left feeling sick and disoriented - so do me a favor for today at the very least:
1. Let someone close to you know how much they're really appreciated.
2. Let bygones be bygones and resolve any issues that don't need to exist.
3. Drive safe, for fucks sake.
