Hah, interesting. At least some people are making an effort to learn the truth about the situation.

Johnny Howards in phatt pants
I think its a good idea though- they only know what they hear and put their own standards on top of that- so they are very harsh on drugs purely because they only hear about the bad things. At least then they can say they have looked at both sides and made an INFORMED decision.
My theory is that no matter how tough they get on drugs people will always end up outsmarting them & that may make it more dangerous. If its going to happen anyway why not at least spend some of the money making it safer??

Sandra Kanck .. now there's a politician who is saying something that I can agree with for once. Thank you for doing something different and thinking outside the box.

Maybe next time she comes to a rave she will be "Krancking" it with us all night, yeah?

Three words I wish MP's would pay more attention to: harm minimisation and education instead of fear tactics and propaganda.

That is all.

It's only not tax-able because it's not legal...

Make it legal and tax the fuck out of it!!!

That'll help our underfunded healthcare system!

Problem solved...

yeah, but they'd probably put 2mg of chemical as opposed to about 90mg and charge 50x the price!

They have shooting galleries to make heroin injection safer, seeing as they know people are going to keep doing it .. why not make drug testing something more widely used as well?

I mean bringing in laws to stop it is all well and good .. but you KNOW people are going to keep doing it. Why not just put in methods of stopping it, but also making it safer for those that choose to continue to use?

That makes logical sense to me, surely the politicians will catch on at some point :/

you see thats all well and good, and in a perfect world that would happen, but most polititions are alarmingly conservitive. there is honnestly more chance of getting weed legalised, but i am glad at the stance the police were taking with ravers they caught at enchanted

A very good idea!! This way they can see what it is really all like (or at least be given the opportunity too as some will still sadly not see the truth out of choice...)not the over-hyped sensationalised bullshit they dream up in their media/government party cauldrons which have no or very litte fact based information behind them.

One day the people that *clears throat & coughs* 'lead' this country will actually wake up & realise just excatly what the phuck is going on & ASSIST in PREVENTING outcomes where little johhny that had one too many trying to be cool (& who was GROSSLY missinformed to begin with so thought that it would be ok) has now passed away!! Instead of using such sad instances AGAINST the community at large with scare tacticts & irrational rantings about something they NO NOTHING OF nor are WILLING TO LEARN anything about!!

Funny isn't it; you have to quantify all your actions to your boss or superior with EXAMPLES & FACT BASED information....well most of the time biggrin.gif whereas they can sit there & dribble as much phucking bullshit as they want with no factual base or anything to quantify their thoughts &/or actions but as they are 'higher up in the chain' it must essentially be ACCEPTED & taken as gospel &/or fact!?!!WTF!? blink.gif

Scary times we live in people, scary times... sad.gif

Lets Just hope that their are more people like Dr David Caldicott & MP Sandra Kanck who are willing to speak up & act rationally with regards to hard hitting social issues that affect a broad spectrum of todays generation. As Tara has stated the more education, preperation & harm minimilisation that can be given SURELY is of more benefit than scare tactics & propganda bullshit! is it 2006 or 1906!?!?!?
As stated in this thred, most 'recreational users' are young (well not all of us laugh.gif )working adults, that are also eductaed voters (do they forget about that!? dry.gif ), why not treat us with the respect & dignity that we deserve & give US the option to be able to test our own etc & make sure what some of us chose to do in our past time is a safe practice!? Like Paul said, tax the phuck out of them! Use the $ to better our health system & the like. Use the $ to educate younger kids (& some of the older ones tongue.gif ) with regards to the good & the bad, with everything out on the table it is then an INFORMED choice not a shot in the dark! It is an issue that will not go away, lets just hope that the actions of the MP from this weekend just gone & the continued efforts of Dr Caldicott & advoctaes like him reverberate within the Halls of Parliament et all & wake these people up to the real needs of the community & the people that in the not-to-distant will be future leaders within this country!!

i'd rather see ads on tv explaining exactly how pills work, at what dose they are fatal and the accurate side effects, rather than footage of someone on the ground out cold and someone saying "i THINK she took ecstacy"
the media sholuld be made accountable for spreading propaganda and should cut to the facts.  but its nice and convenient to make parents afraid of substances, make people who recreationally drop out to be some kind or savage evil beasts, low lives and what not.

the problem with any illegal drug is that no-one knows how potent they'll be, what they're cut with, etc, which is what makes these drugs dangerous and why pill-testing should be implemented, not out-lawed at raves!!

as for media portayal... these ads are produced by "anti-whatever groups" and I doubt anyone really believes or cares about ANY message they spread... how many ppl do you know that have given up smoking since they saw the ad with the gangrine foot about to be amputated?? I know a few ppl who are trying to quit, but it has nothing to do with the new ads or pictures on the cigarette packets!! the thing about facts and statistics is that you can manipulate them to show virtually anything you want them to...

I think MP's should go to raves, provided they have an open, non-judgemental outlook and are willing to look past the loud music and illegal drugs to experience what is underneath... PLUR... but at the end of the day what do you really expect to happen?? even if they agree that raves aren't as bad as the media portrays, they'll be condenmed by their peers if they publicly admit it!! MP's only care about long lunches, travel expense accounts and wasting tax-payers money, so why would they make any public statements that would potentially upset their gravy-train??? I think it's just another publicity stunt... is there an election coming up??

its illegal because of money, how much money is shipped around due to drugs, if they are legalised, no more drug enforcement officers, less people getting thrown in jail therefore less jobs for jail wardens, no more fines. trhe government gets soooo much money to target drugs... eliminate the illegality... poof... bye bye money.

i'd rather see ads on tv explaining exactly how pills work, at what dose they are fatal and the accurate side effects, rather than footage of someone on the ground out cold and someone saying "i THINK she took ecstacy"

KANCK SAYS RAVE
PARTY SAFER THAN
THE FRONT BAR
LISA ALLISON and SAM RICHES
06jul06
POLICE seized about 500 drug deals from a rave party that Democrats MP Sandra Kanck claims was a "far better environment" than a hotel bar.

Ms Kanck, who attended the rave on Saturday night and later urged all MPs to do the same as part of the drug debate, said yesterday she felt safer at the rave than in a hotel.

"These people using ecstasy and whatever they're using, they are not aggressive, they're not shouting, they're not fighting, you don't get people puking all over the place, it's a far, far better environment," Ms Kanck told ABC local radio.

"If I had a choice between being at a rave party and a hotel bar, I'd go to the rave party every time."

But police told The Advertiser last night four men were arrested at the Winter Enchanted rave on Saturday night, at the Night Train theatre restaurant in Light Square.

Police allege they were carrying more than 300 ecstasy tablets for sale as well as amphetamines, LSD, cannabis and about $1500 in cash. Twenty-one on-the-spot drug fines were also issued.

Police say some of those arrested are linked to motorcycle gangs.

Superintendent Paul Schramm said that while the rave party itself was relatively incident free, "it seemed more than a coincidence that we arrested four people for possessing a variety of drugs for sale".

He said raves were a common environment "for predators peddling their cocktail of drugs" to young people.

This is the third time Ms Kanck has controversially entered the drug debate. The MP previously:

TOLD State Parliament in May that "ecstasy is not a dangerous drug . . . We have been told the ecstasy is a dangerous substance. We do not have the evidence".

URGED fellow MPs on Tuesday to attend rave parties to learn first-hand about drugs related to legislation they are debating. At the rave, she was accompanied by drug testing campaigner Dr David Caldicott and another doctor.

Yesterday, Ms Kanck said the Government needed to introduce a pill-testing trial so users would be alerted if ecstasy pills were not pure. "If I were in a venue where there were 3000 people drinking alcohol and in a venue where there were 3000 people taking ecstasy, I believe I would be safer in the venue where people were taking ecstasy," she said.

"I believe they (raves) would be safe for the majority of people."

She said people who were breaking the law, however, should be prosecuted.

Ms Kanck was aware of some arrests in relation to drugs and said she knew of one person from the rave who had been admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital after taking drugs.

Dr Caldicott, an emergency physician at Royal Adelaide Hospital, said the number of alcohol-affected people in the emergency department after big cricket matches outnumbered rave-related admissions by up to six times.

Anti-drugs MLC Ann Bressington said Ms Kanck's latest comments were irresponsible. "I think she is undermining parents' and educators' efforts to stop people from using drugs," she said.

"She is not talking about a party. She is talking about a drug scene where ecstasy is taken."

Ms Bressington conceded Ms Kanck made her comments in relation to harm minimisation.

"But what she should be saying is there is no room in our society for mind-altering drugs. Ecstasy . . . is known to cause brain damage."

She implored Ms Kanck to come to a drug rehabilitation centre with her to see the effects of illicit drugs.

Health Minister John Hill said MPs could educate themselves about drug taking by visiting emergency department and mental health wards.

A spokeswoman for Premier Mike Rann said he would not be attending a rave "any time soon", while Democrats state president Richard Pascoe, who already has a strained relationship with Ms Kanck, said he was "lost for words".

"But what she should be saying is there is no room in our society for mind-altering drugs. Ecstasy . . . is known to cause brain damage."

Yeah, cause apart from paying $60 for entry, however much $$ for outfits and accessories, having fun and listening to some big international and local DJs, everyone was there to take pills only...... rolleyes.gif

So how about the flipside of her going to a rave as well to see who actually uses them and how they use them? If anyone should go to raves, its the anti-drug campaigners, at least they'll see its not all some big crack den and get off everyones back about it ohmy.gif

Has anyone written to the editorial about these articles? I'm tempted...

we are targeted because we go around in shiny ravepants and weird and wacky outfits, we do our best to look different. the fact that its common knowlege that alot of people take drugs at these partys doesnt help

i think the interesting part was when i was talking to acidangels parents about raves, they thought that these events were dens of hedonism and the most common place for drink spikings, and that just even being at a rave was dangerous. its this sort of misinformed attitude which gets us targeted and hated by large parts of the comunity.

personaly i think the cops prefer us when we are out and about in the city over people who drink, they are less likely to have to scrape us up off the pavement for one reason or another

Sandra, here's the truth on ecstasy
LISA ALLISON

DRUG rehabilitation counsellor Georgina Karapas says Democrat Sandra Kanck only saw the "honeymoon" at the Winter Enchanted rave.

Ms Karapas, a former drug addict and now a drug counsellor for Drug Beat SA in Elizabeth Grove, said Ms Kanck had not seen the full picture when she attended the rave at the Night Train in Light Square on Saturday night.

Ms Kanck, the state's only Democrat MP, has made several controversial comments around ecstasy use and raves, since attending the rave at the Night Train theatre restaurant.

She said drug-fuelled raves were a far better environment than alcohol-fuelled pubs and that people using ecstasy should test their pills.

Ms Karapas said she was appalled at the comments.

"What she is seeing is the honeymoon period," Ms Karapas said. "She is not seeing the downside of ecstasy - the comedown that is a huge depression and anxiety that can last for weeks. She has made her comments without doing her homework."

Ecstasy reduces the amount of serotonin in the brain, a chemical necessary for mood control.

Drug Beat SA was set up by anti-drug Independent MP Ann Bressington, a strident critic of Ms Kanck.

Former addicts Jack Calvett, 18, of Balhannah and George Nikolaidis, 36, of Payneham, who are part-way through their 15 months rehabilitation program at the centre, said they would be happy to talk to Ms Kanck about their experiences.

Mr Nikolaidis said he regularly took amphetamines and used alcohol but ecstasy only once. He took it while drinking and described the experience as "the worst feeling on earth".

"The statement she has made about pill testing shows she does not understand what she is talking about, because it implies that taking pills is a safe thing to do," he said.

Once a heavy user of marijuana, amphetamines and other drugs, Mr Calvett was too scared to ever swallow ecstasy.

"She (Ms Kanck) needs to spend a few days with an ecstasy addict," he said.

"I have seen heaps of people come down and they are so depressed."

Ms Kanck declined to comment yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Democrats state executive have called an emergency meeting next Monday to discuss Ms Kanck's comments.

they are all idiots ... sandra wants us to talk about drugs, and the mainstream want to scare us 'cos "drugs are bad ... mmmkay?". i know i don't need to convince any of you registered anthemites about the benefits of open discussion, but what can we do about the uneducated masses?

drugs are bad, and everyone has their own experiences with them (thats a whole other thred!) which means we all have our own opinions on this topic. i do not believe that our government can tell us what is good and bad, and i believe that their decision making process is flawed. once again we can bring up our favourite argument that alchohol is responsible for hundreds of deaths each year, yet the government is happy because it gains millions of $$ through taxes/licenses/etc ...

ecstacy is the current drug of choice for many (note busted shipment of 350kg!! ohmy.gif last week) and as such should be a topic for educated debate and not propaganda. I must say tho, if we take the whole apparatus setup for alchohol in this country and simply replace alchohol with MDMA:

licensed venues and age restrictions
approved manufacturing with enforceable standards
mandatory labelling and ingredient disclosure (even nutritional information...)
state and federal taxes on wholesalers and retailers
individual decisions about consumption
violent and antisocial behaviour (oh sorry thats booze!)
addiction/family breakdowns/counselling groups

actually i do not believe that MDMA should be legal or licensed but it is worth talking about cool.gif

Gah, the article in the Advertiser yesterday just shat me to tears. For an example...

"Ecstasy *dot! dot! dot!* is known to cause brain damage. "

I draw attention to the ellipsis as it covers what the quoted actually said in the first place, and this could severely skew the opinion the reader gets out of the sentence. Ok, so I know it's not strictly relating to the debate, but it just goes to show how horrendous Adelaide's main form of print media is in showing a well-rounded argument.

*sigh* I hate The Advertiser. I really, really do.

ANYWAY! Back on topic, I commend Ms Kanck for having the guts I guess to really stick it up the conservatives and make her point known. I'm happy that someone is finally letting the opinions of "the other side" (us) be known. I mean this kind of stuff is going to happen anyway, so the key issue should be to make sure that if it *does* happen (which it will...always, no matter how much we are scared against it) make it as safe as possible through accessibility to testing, and just as importantly EDUCATION as to exactly what we're doing, what'll happen and in a way that won't make a person feel isolated or terrified like drug "educators" have done for years. Problems happen when n00bs have no idea

Ugh, such a poorly structured argument there, but you get the gist. Just needed to get it out. And I still hate The Advertiser.

nO_iRiSr

Posted by: Shadow Jul 7 2006, 09:14 PM

ok.. i just had a quick browse at wot everyone has said so i'm sorry for repeating anything..

first of all - i've read both articles on this matter.. and i find it highly amusing that the article is targeting 'ecstasy' but when they were talking to rehab patients.. neither of these patients are recovering from an ecstasy addiciton.. i wonder why that is? perhaps because they couldnt find any people that used ecstacy to the point where they needed rehab? they could only find methamphetamine addicts.. and yes fair enough meth/speed is taken at raves.. but why arent they basing their arguments on meth? because they have rehab and they use other resources for meth addicts. there is absolutly nothing to help people with their pills.. so if they bring in pill testing again wouldnt that give them more reliable facts to argue their point with?

secondly i think that kanck is 100% rite in saying that she felt safer at a rave then in a pub.. the first reason is that your not likely to get raped, stabbed, smashed over the head by a pool cue/bottle or anything of the like and the second reason is that people at raves are a lot more willing to help you if you get in trouble..
for example - if a raver over heats, or throws up, or has any issues whatso ever the chances of someone helping you are a alot higher than if you were throwing up in a pub or got alcohol poisoning. If you had your drink spiked (which happens alot more in pubs than at raves) or if you passed out from drinking too much no one would get you a bottle of water, they'd probably steal your money, rape you and leave you there to die. i know for a fact thats what would happen because i've been in both situations, and when i had my drink spiked in the pub my phone was stolen, my cash was stolen and i was left for dead. i've overheated at a rave before thou and the amount of wonderful people that were willing to help me out was amazing.

fair enough drugs are dangerous, but i think on the hole alcohol is alot more dangerous and if they are so worried about drugs being dangerous then bring in the bloody testing. give the people who do take them a helping hand and teach them to be safe about it. the only way its dangerous is when people dont know what they're taking and how much their bodies can handle and how to deal with the effects. if they bought in the testing people could find out exactly what they were taking, exactly how much their bodies can handle, and also how to handle the sides effects.

awareness is the key.
oh but sorry.. 'i've never been to a rave but i kno they're dangerous. ravers and people that take drugs are more dangerous then pedophiles and murders and rapists. oh and dont 4get i'm basing my opinion on a complete lack of facts but i'm an mp so i must know all'

egotistical uneducated closed minded fools smile.gif

but hey.. what do i kno? i'm just a hairdresser smile.gif

Yeah, I read that one too. Definitely a better written article imo, but then again, the Independent Weekly actually bother to research and present a well-rounded argument instead of just spouting out hear'say like The Advertiser.

I feel it still largely presented the mainstream opinion though, but then again...how else do they expect to sell papers?

once again we can bring up our favourite argument that alchohol is responsible for hundreds of deaths each year, yet the government is happy because it gains millions of $$ through taxes/licenses/etc ...

Taken from the back of my cigarette packet (it's an anti-smoking one obviously .. but almost pro-drugs).

"CAUSES OF DEATH IN AUSTRALIA

Tobacco - 19, 019
Alcohol - 2, 831
Motor Vehicle Accidents - 1, 731
Illegal Drugs - 863"

Source: AIHW Quantification of drug caused mortality and mortality in Australia, 1998 and ABS Causes of Death, 1998.

http://www.aihw.gov.au/publications/phe/qdcmma98/

It's interesting .. when reading up on the illicit drugs section it turns out that drugs such as MDMA dont cause anywhere near a large portion of those 863 deaths from illegal drugs..

I really can't even put words to how ridiculous this seems from my perspective. Legal drugs killing and doing more damage than the illegal ones (in general) .. and then when you actually compare legal drugs to JUST ecstacy .. the ratio must be something like 100:1 alcohol/tobacco related deaths compared to pill related deaths (and that's with me being conservative.. it's probably more like 150-200:1).

Seriously .. heh.

not to be a wet blanket on that argument jutsin, but you also have to realise a much smaller proportion of society takes ilegal drugs compared to drinking or smoking, so the figures are not very representitive of the overall population, what we would need is something like percentage of users to deaths or some shit to make it more scientific.

MP's should go to raves. They need to experience the PLUR. But its so true what Sandra Kanck said about the differences between pub and rave clientele. Our scene is so much better in terms of environment (except its not ear friendly) and people.

Very good point - just adds weight to the argument that more research and education needs to be undertaken in this area. You can prove or disprove anything with statistics!!!

The underlying fact remains that the government is far too focussed on highlighting the (questionable) effects of illegal products, distracting and frightening the general population into submission and allowing them to get on with getting drunk, beating their wives, causing fatal car accidents and smoking heavily in order to clogg up the health system.....which is funded by (amongst other things)....taxes levied on alchohol & cigarettes!! What an interesting vicious circle!!

I have never had any of that ever happen to me Catsy.

I think MP's (what does MP stand for?) should at least experience one rave in their life time. I know they won't be able to appreciate the music but they can appreciate the warmth and welcoming environment that is the rave community (well...us at anthems anyway).

Aeon
mp = member of parlament
never had that happen to me either
asianfunkphenomena
so in essence...they really should be called MoP's!!!

so what if MPs go to raves, they are trying to experience it first hand, instead of just looking at the overall general stereotype look the scene is given by everyone else.

get over it.

I think first hand knowledge of anything is a lot better than "here say" or "research indicates" bloody bar graphs and statistics. I for one would be glad to see them attend more events like this to gain first hand knowledge. Ravers are a different crowd not the usual run of the mill sheep that go to pubs we are individuals and are proud to show that fact by our love of music and how we dress. For them to see this is good but its is a lot different for them to actually understand.
LadyK
My friend is studying to be a mental health nurse & has made an effort to learn about peoples experiences before/during & after drugs (good & bad) rather then just reading her text books & listening to lectures about how evil they are. Its not quite an MP but shes making an effort to try to understand why people do this & is doing it in an unbiased way wub.gif
Im still not sure why people are so scared to know the whole truth- nobody will force them to change their minds once they know- maybe theyre scared tongue.gif

Gold!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

I seen more fights IN 1 NIGHT in the bar i worked at then i have at a rave EVER!!!
I say its a friendly environment and come one come all! Mp or not smile.gif

imagine taking their glass of scotch or wine away from them... they would have a field day on the subject... why? because something so processed like alcohol or as DEADLY as cigarettes is taxed... So that makes it legal... more people die from cigarettes and alcohol then anything ive ever witnessed anyone take in a club... the deaths from illicit drugs arent even on the same scale as the 'legal' stuff... ah what a society we live in where this can happen...

My mate got the crap beaten out of him by drunk idiots during a night out drinking... i havent been in one fight or witnessed one fight at a rave event... more over the only time ive seen ambulances are from people who got themselves right messy on ALCOHOL.....

at the end of the day this is another pointless post because it wont change anything, reason isnt something we can use in this battle.

Theres no way that any gumbyment will legalise or defend the use of any drug. Thay dont even condone the use of alcohol heavily. I can understand the stigma all drugs have. Even the rave scene. Cause along the lines some where people are making them and normally these people are in all types of crime. Crime and drugs are linked. But in saying that theres always 2 sides of the coin. People can and do take them responsibly and dont hurt anyone. It just has the stigma as been bad. Yeah there are helth issue but hay what isnt these days? Obesity takes out alot more people and 9 out of 10 times that is self inflicted.

My advice is be responsible and be carefull either way you go and just HAVE FUN
asianfunkphenomena
Nice words man. Even prescriptive and supermarket drugs can be hazardous to your health.

Also...I'd love to invite Sandra Kanck to anthems. We could show her what an anthems event is like. Is she from Adelaide?
