for all those that are confused about the words THEN and THAN here is the definitions for you...

Definitions of THEN on the Web:

subsequently or soon afterward (often used as sentence connectors); "then he left"; "go left first, then right"; "first came lightning, then thunder"; "we watched the late movie and then went to bed"; "and so home and to bed"
in that case or as a consequence; "if he didn't take it, then who did?"; "keep it then if you want to"; "the case, then, is closed"; "you've made up your mind then?"; "then you'll be rich"
then(a): at a specific prior time; "the then president"
that time; that moment; "we will arrive before then"; "we were friends from then on"
at that time; "I was young then"; "prices were lower back then"; "science as it was then taught"

definition for THAN

1. (used, as after comparative adjectives and adverbs, to introduce the second member of an unequal comparison): She's taller than I am. - NOT THEN I AM!!
2. (used after some adverbs and adjectives expressing choice or diversity, such as other, otherwise, else, anywhere, or different, to introduce an alternative or denote a difference in kind, place, style, identity, etc.): I had no choice other than that. You won't find such freedom anywhere else than in this country. NOT I HAD NO CHOICE OTHER THEN THAT!!

i think this brings up a good point...

what the frog is wrong with the education system these days?

most of the younger generation cant write english the way its supposed to be written.

is it due to spell checker perhaps? or is it just the slack arse attitude of the people teaching it?
Elektro Kitten
YES!!!!! another good one

and here vs hear

i hear the music vs look over here...

Sadly, i cannot understand how it happens since the introduction of the SACE system, which comprises of a compulsory module dedicated to literacy. Are the people who write in this way leaving school before year 11, or failing the literacy component of the certificate due to the shitness of the education system at the moment.

from personal experience:

kids dont pay enough attention to teachers=overload of ditzes

mobile phone text messages, we try to save money by finding ways to shorten words.. it becomes habit

also time saving on msn enforces this habit even more

personally i dont try unless it's for something important like school work, in my job it's almost all labour, even the orders we ring up are shorthand. i am a slow typer so i save time by shortening the words i am using.

it will vary from person to person too

please note it has a lot to do with how a teacher teaches, not just what they have to teach. teachers should be tought how to teach better, instead of revising and topping up on new information.

I do it myself in txt's and on MSN, I mean look at the word txt itself, misses a letter in its own right, it's definately bad in terms of literacy.

You know the worst example is in phone manuals, there'll be a section on abbreviations for txt messages, such as "lol"

Good example:

http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/textmes...breviations.asp
Elektro Kitten
yeah i'm sure sms and msn doesnt help. But knowing the language first should be something taught at school. I did a lot of grammer in primary school, by high shcool it was more or less expected of you to know.

however, i went to private schools; public system may differ
Oldskoolie
nah, not really, i did privat from yrs 8 - 11 and then public for 2 years worth of yr 12. Not because im a dumb cunt, but because i wanted to do better than pass... Not that it helped because ended up spending alot of my time umm..... it was good to do some higher learning laugh.gif

Nothing is wrong with the education system - its the generation of students that we now have in our schools (we now have the "Y" generation who learn so differently to us who are in the "X" generation).

I dont believe the introduction of SACE has caused young people being incapable of spelling correctly. Yes, its true that students only need to complete 2 units of English (Year 11 only) and its not compulsory to complete in Year 12. I did not do English in Year 12 but I can spell, use grammar and punctuation correctly as well as being a teacher. I have taught students with special needs for English and they passed - there are many many very good English teachers within the secondary schooling system.

Both teachers and students need to earn the respect of each other for there to be any attention paid to what is being taught in the classroom - that is the first rule of any of my classes - RESPECT EACH OTHER!

Teachers do do their job well - just you try going into a classroom of nearly 30 students who are just not interested in being at school! If teachers do not revise and top up on new information, how are the students able to get the newest and up-to-date information available in each of their subjects?

Life-long learning should be something that we all do!

Give teachers a break and remember how hard we do work and what we do achieve with many of our students. I definitely know that I earned the respect of my Year 12s who have just finished and they all have earned mine.

OMG...was this thread made for me laugh.gif The illiteracy shown in these forums often shocks me no end, and I do think it must be a failing of the current education system, because its the younger among us who do it the worst ohmy.gif

But then the English language is a pretty ludicrous one when it comes to grammar, and words that sound the same but have entirely different meanings....but if I can spell and use correct grammar etc anyone can......so if everyone could just use the Kings English and stop annoying the hell out of me with your typo's and/or illiteracy that would be great tongue.gif

dyslexia is different from laziness or stupidity though tongue.gif You have an excuse (although I think you should take note of the little red lines that will appear under mispelt words a bit more, but thats just me, and I'm picky when it comes to correct spelling)

there is no little red lines??

one of my problems is thatr when i read what i have written i see in my mind what is ment to be there. not what actually is there.

so i cant actually proof read what i write as my mind doesnt actually pick it up most days.

tho i can read others work and pick thje shit out of it. as for me then, its new text and i need to read.

im also dyslexic. as is Paul. However my relates more to numbers. Which makes my job at work very interesting!!! and... no wonder i keep losing lotto!!!
Harley
Im not really that phased on how people spell on this or any other forum. But it is good that you can get pointed out the mistakes as it will only make your literacy alot better and that can not be a bad thing.

A teacher friend of mine always picks me up on the obvious when we are sxting sorry messaging and its funny some of the stuff that she does pick me up on. Its stuff you learnt in primary school. All tho i wasnt the sharpest knife in the drawer.

When im writting a formal letter to a lawyer or the local council or something simalar i always get some one to go over it for me to see if it makes sence and the english and grammer is ok. The last thing you want to do is put an opinion across to some one in authority and your english etc is terrible. Thay will laugh at you and will not take you seriously.

neway i tink dats enough gebberish nd i beta go nd do sum work b4 i get 2 lazy nd fal asleep on da work desk.

*

that's protanomoly - where a weakness in red receptors results in poor red-green hue discrimination. Occurs in about 1% of males.

the brain forms a sentance in images not in words - so when we type it out we still see it as we saw it in our mind. You dont imagine or dream in words but images. We acquire the ability to transform those images into words... because the brain processes so quickly we often think we've read over something and it's all correct but are just relying on the original image of what it's meant to look like so you could miss the same error numerous times unless you consciously go back and review it with a mind to picking up variances in the image you originally formed of the sentance and the reality of what you've typed. (like those spot the differences pictures!!)

Typo's suck but we all make them. I don't necessarily think it's the education system that has failed as (like smp said) the english language itself is flawed. People learn and apply that learning differently. Someone who has no need to be accurate all the time in their typing/writing is bound to make more mistakes than someone who has to pay attention to it more.

I don't like making typo's but I will keep doing, just like I'll keep making grammatical errors. It's only annoying when people use their own abbreviations for words out of pure laziness that it really irritates me.

Yes the English language is fraked up. Most languages have steady laws. This is why you will see kids say words that don't make sense because they apply a theory to a word that has an exception 'i seed (rather than saw)' etc..

okies... Here my thought..

Modern English came from a collection from:
Latin 31%, French 29%, Germanic 25%, Greek 6%, Unknown 4%, Proper Names: 4% and Other Languages 1%

Now... We've all heard of OLD ENGLISH... we'll I'm sure the would be very upset about the way, even the most 'proper' writers, use there language today! With the advent of MSN, SMS, Gobalisation, Computers, Spell Checkers, Etc... maybe we're entering a PHASE of the LANGUAGE...

It has evolved int he past, what can it not happen again.

off / of , hear / here, than / then, Two / Too / To / 2, Won / One / 1

All of the these meanins can be taking from a WORDS CONTEXT... the different spelling is not really relavant!

Also the letters like 'k' and 'c' are basically the same, no reason to have both of them... 'k' would do for everything... You could look at some European langagues with only 22 letter and they work prefectly well... we've got 3-4 we can drop and it would not effect out language.

Finally / of / an / a / the / all these 'articles' are really just a was for time.. you can construct a perfectly logical sentance without them... most asian language don't have them and they seem to be doing all right...

The future will hold some chinese/spanish/english mixed language with will take the best of all these langauge and reduce it down. And you'd better get your chinese skills polished up.. becasue your children and there children will need it... Once china is the biggest economic power in the world with 1.5 billion people... it's gonna play a big part in our language!
