I listen to a pretty wide range of stuff...lot of early goth stuff like Specimen, Virging Prunes, Joy Divisions, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure (not goth though strictly speaking), also love The Smiths, Morrissey, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Marilyn Manson...there's probably a few others I've neglected to mention...I like trad jazz, big band, blues (especially early blues like Robert Johnston and Bessie Smith) , folk, bluegrass and gregorian chants as well cool.gif
~Em~r
I grew up with Rock bands such as Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana... all of which still get quite a bit of play around my house.

Also love Linkin Park, Evanesence.... ah the list is endless.

being a classically trained musician, I have an appreciation for classical music. Especially strings (probably why I love PVC by Eryk Orpheus so much)

Having lived in the country and having competed in rodeos and lived that lifestyle for a number of years, I also enjoy country music like Garth Brooks, Lee Kernaghan, Tim McGraw, Dixie Chicks...

and now, being a dancer, there is a type of music that suits everything. suits my mood, suits the style of dance I've been working on (yes, I do other stuff besides rave dancing) one day I could be listening to Old School Hip Hop, the next day it could be Britney Spears, next day could be B2K, next day it could be a classical piece.

seriously, there is no genre of music that I don't like.

Also... just following on from a comment mich made in the BDO thread

"there's a lot more to music than what you hear at raves"

so true

BUT

there is also a lot more to the music that you do hear at raves.

I think there are a lot of people out there that really don't understand/feel music. regardless of genre. a lot of people take it for granted.

*sigh*

When I was younger...I grew up with bands like Santana, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Cold Chisel and artists like Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and James brown etc. My dad had heaps of the old 12", 7" vinyl way back then and he had heaps of soul and disco sorta stuff. My musical influences stem from him and mum.

Because of mum and dad, I love everything even some country ballads. I drew my inspiration of dancing from the likes of Usher, Michael Jackson, James Brown, Gene kelly and such. I am a major softy for the old school musicals - watch "Singin' In The Rain" starring Gene kelly and Debbie Reynolds. A movie from 1952. Those dance moves can be incorporated into any sort of style of dance, including those of now biggrin.gif

I listen to alot of other shit. Grew up listening to Oldschool punk like The Offspring (Smash style), NOFX (punk in drublic), Nirvana, silverchair, Grinspoon, KoRn and shit like that.
I still play it weekly but when its time to crank nothing compares to hard dance crap.
Unbalancedr
I listen to pretty much everything,
I get very much into the metal and hardcore sort of scene and I'm also a big fan of some good hip hop.

yeah awesome point wink.gif and a good way to put it too.

Being a trained musician, i have a wide range of genre's i listen to.
======

as a kid i started listening to dance, then about 1998 i went off it (i think alot of it was to do with over compression, things started to get boring) so i started to listen to alternate/Rock.

As i played flute from age 10 (1995) i listened/played alot of classical too. Being in a choir i listened/sang to alot more contemp/jazz style music. By the end of high-school i was listening to alot of jazz, alternate stuff like garbage, radio-head, our lady peace, linkin park etc...as well as a lot of Black/death metal. i.e. cradle of filth (omg dani is one of my heroes), opeth, dimmu borgir, metalica etc...

Then i studied jazz voice/flute at the conservatorium. At the same time i got back into dance music by producing tracks of a trip-hop dnb style. and after a while i went to traffic, and loved the DnB and then from there got into anthems and from there on its history!

i listen to mainly dnb, electro, electro house, techno, house. But i make music/vox for a variety of dance styles (kinda doesn't fit into one genre!)

And this year i'm doing sound engineering... should be fun!

So i listen to classical/metal/alternate/jazz/dance (of all varieties)
just not RnB and most country music... ick!

I've always been a big fan of Nirvana, I dunno, it was something about Kurt that made me drawn into him. You don't hear many famous people like him saying he didn't want all the money and the glamour that came with being famous, he just wanted people to hear his songs.

Other then that main one, I don't just listen or like 1 genre, if my ears like it then I like it tongue.gif

Oh I played the drums in high school too, back when I had longer hair lol
BOOSTINGr
I used to be right into alternative etc. Loved Pearl jam, nirvana, smashing pumpkins, and all those jjj type bands. Lately though all i seem to listen to is hard NRG and a little calssic rave stuff from 10 years ago.

One band i love and would pay money to see would be wolf mother.... its totally out of my norm but those guy's rock with a 70's feel like the old Sex, drugs and rock and roll type days.

I love that movie, Gene Kelly is/was an absolutely amazing dancer. I've studied ballroom dancing and I must admit I do incorporate some ballroom stuff into club dancing as well, could definitely see Gene Kelly being used for inspiration as well smile.gif

It's good to see so many people listen to other music besides just dance...and Kandii is right when she says there is more to dance music than what people realise as well. cool.gif

incognitor
I grew up with all sorts... lol first tape i remember was the top gun sound track hahaha yeah... Highway to the danger zone lol that shit was awesome

nar my first taste in music was actually dance/metalish stuff... like midish 90s is when i started really started developing my own taste... used to listen to silverchair, korn, original limpbizkit (3 dollar bill yalls still the best album) Metalica, u konw the drill. never really liked the punk sorta stuff... loved stuff like Dune all the old rave and happy hard... then in bout 98ish took a turn for the worst with full hip hop/rap (snoop, wu tang, krs1 all that sorta stuff... yick to most of it now still have a taste for some) soon came out of that and back to the more mainstream dance, then into more harder style in bout 00

I also have to add that I love my r&b and hiphop. I love those mad joints that just make you wanna bounce and do the chickenhead laugh.gif love some of the ballads that are out as well. Some of the production on these tracks are off the hook (eg; Cassie - You and Me, Case - Crooked Letter). I love all the freestyle sessions they have out in the US, UK and A-Town where they rap over an instrumental; stringing together some mad-ass rhymes and singing. biggrin.gif
DeLr

I'm into just about everything but i have the attention span of a butterfly... so there is really no one particular genre that doesn't annoy me after a while. i don't have a fave band or type of music, it's all mood dependant. I will however quickly tire of emo crud (this new punk shite that is around - it's soooo boring), rnb and country and western (same category - find it all really boring and about the same stuff over and over again). Metal I love but in small doses and not so loud that you can't actually hear the song. I like my music at a moderate level so I can concentrate on it without being distracted by the loudness... damn sensitive ears.... poor Toby has to keep it at acceptable levels to avoid copping abuse from me.

I'm a fan of old school hip hop but the shite they produce these days does nothing for me, Aussie hip hop (particularly the Hilltop Hoods) always gets me bouncing and for a good old dose of rock Metallica will do it for me every time.
I'm most impressed with bands that stretch themselves and try new things. I always get so disappointed when a band I like brings out an album that sounds exactly the same as the last one. And i have no respect for bands who just recycle their own material and re-release it without ever adding anything new - Wolfmother are a perfect example of this - most over rated band to come out in the last 10 year IMO.
I just figure that if a band can't do better than they did last time then they should probably take a break and try remember what they are in it for, if they realise it's just the money then they ought to quit - if they find their passion again then go on and put that energy into a new, brilliant sound rather than the same old sound.

I have high standards!!!
