Well, I am a little bored so thought I would start this discussion.

What are your thoughts of David Hicks and should he be allowed to return to Australia?

live by the sword, die by the sword..

you wanna play with fire then you should expect to get burnt!

dude has a right to a speedy trial, but i dont see why he should be returned to australia
Fulcrumr
Nope, imprisonment or death... either or...
*smp*r
I don't know enough of the hard facts involved here, but I do think he should get a fair unbiased (by the media) trial, and if found guilty only then is his fate decided......If he's guilty then let him rot in his cell....

I think its an abomination that he's been held in custody for so long without a proper trial though.....

He turned his back on australia.. cant expect us to welcome him back.

Tho i do agree its been to long with out a charge in the prison he is in. charge him and jail him properly or send him back to the middle east.

Well i think he should be trialed and found quilty. He is an Australian and when he is sentenced he should do his time here in Australia as he is Australian and Australia is part of war against terrorism. Why should America house him or even England for a matter of a fact. We dont house there country men criminals so why should them? I say he is quilty and deserves what he gets but and the end of the day he is Australian and we should deal with him.

Can we trade him for johnny howard? Lesser of two evils IMO...

i dont really have an opinion, even tho i voted no. i havnt follwed this story close enough.

I think David Hicks should be tried in Australia. As much as the Western world hates him, he is an Australian citizen. There's no way he should be tried by any other judicial system other than our own. I reckon he should get life imprisonment because the ordeal that he must be going through whilst imprisoned in Cuba would send any man insane or to the point of suicide.

He didn't turn his back on Australia. Nobody ever said he did that. He did what he believed in. Even though it seems wrong to us, he probably didnt think it was wrong for him. Unfortunately, his system of beliefs were marred by religion to the point of extremist behaviour.

does anyone actually know WHY he is imprisoned?? not just as in " oh he's bad cos he was fighting the americans", like reasons why.

I dont know that that is correct
turn his back and spit on us?????
there are not many outlets for psychos in Australia, even the army etc is not eager to take all the crazies as they want controllable people wink.gif
it is commonly known for MALES, that if you want to mame and kill , you become a mercenary and join the nearest war
there is a surprising number of people who leave nice societies to travel to conflicts
PURELY to satify their BLOODLUST
I thought.................but could be wrong that hicks was over there helping the arabs kill arabs long B4 USA got actively involved and that his "TEAM" of blood thirsty nutters then
found itself against USA
I dont know if he is even MUSLIM at all

either way its his problem NOT AUSTRALIA'S

As far as I know he was pulled over and found to have weapons in his boot. but there is no solid evidence he was actually involved in terrorist training that i've heard of, despite that it seems clear that he was.. My defence would be that I had the weapons for protection - white guy in afghanistan, you'd def want something..

Anyway we should get him back - he's a citizen of australia, not cuba. British terror suspects were out of there in a shot, so why should there be double standards??

David Hicks converted to the Islamic religion when he was 19 I believe.

David Hicks was unfortunately caught up in all the fighting when American forces "invaded" Afghanistan. There has been no legitimate reason why he is imprisoned. American officials have said that they had video evidence of him training with Taliban fighters; and that he had personally met Osama Bin Laden. All illegitimate reasons when they havent even been able to produce evidence of the so-called video let alone reveal how they found the source of info that Hicks had met Osama Bin Laden.

So there's the reason...association with a known "terrorist" organisation and belief in a system of religion.

So basically... you go against the US theres enough reason for them to do whatever they want with you dry.gif which seems like the case now

he went over there to fight in a war and was prepared to die on the battle field

Think about what his dad is going through. Put yourself in his shoes.

Think later in the years that if your son or daughter decided to do something that he or she believed in and it was against everything that you had believed in, would you want him/her to be close to you despite all the hardship that they've put you through? Despite all that you have taught them, wouldn't maternal instincts play a part in you still wanting to be that parent that protects their children no matter what??

Think about all the bullshit that he's put his dad through. A son that has been branded a terrorist. His dad doesn't even know how long he will be imprisoned or when he'll get to see him again.

Yes we should be the ones to have him. After all he is Australian. Why should the Americans or any other country should trial him, fedd him etc?.... We joined the war against terrorism as we are alias. That doesnt mean that we should turn our backs on Australians that have commited crimes etc and hand them over to America or who ever to deal with them. Hell we shouldnt have to deal with another countrys man criminal.
If the Australian S.A.S found Americans fighting with the tailiban do you think that America would let us hold there country men for over 5 years with out no charge in condition that aint fit for a rat and the eventually try them like is what happening to David Hicks?? I dont think that would happen. The Americans would have them in there system pretty damm quick. Why shouldnt we have to deal with him? Why should we let another country deal with him?? After all its not America's war on terrorism its the coalition of the willing. Other countrys are dealing with there idiots who get caught up and stuffing up so why shouldnt we?? I no its Mr. Howard ass licking the Americans to much and just wants to be Bush's rite hand man so to speak

These are the countrys are in the coalition taken from this site

no one can argue that the americans have not taken too long, its ridiculous!

but he could have died anonomously over there

least his dad knows where he is and that he is still alive

david created his own problem and I dont think we should sort it out/end up paying for his stupidity

but he will end up here and will cost us a fortune
Harleyr
Yeah i agree with you there. Maybe he needs to make number plates or something to pay for his time been spent inside hahahahaha

big burden for his dad to shoulder

when your kid decides to destroy their life and goes against everything you believe in
its important not to let them destroy Your life in the process........

sometimes you have to release the apron strings and let them sort their own shit out
cut em loose to preserve yourself
or be bankrupt with a broken heart.........tough choice sad.gif

All I can say is that I'm glad that I'm not the father of David Hicks. Just all the crap that he's been through. Imagine being ostracized from everyone that used to be your friends and family just because your kid did something that seemed inappropriate to the rest of the Western or Western influenced world. Poor bloke.

i agree that if one is going to put themselves in a difficult position then they need to deal with the consequences themselves....

he obvioulsy believed that he was doing the right thing. he may still believe that. in the end....who cares? its his problem not ours, and for all we know the media could be blowing the whole fiasco completely out of proprtion.

another thing. i dont beleive that what america has done (as far as the war on iraq is concerend) was the right thing to do, and if i was a mercenary and had nothing to live for i'd probably go over there and blow some american wanker to pieces with a rocket launcher too...
grooverr
I've said before and I'll say it again, there are hundreds of Australians rotting in overseas jails and no body gives a shit, David Hicks is just getting more publicity.

I dont have a problem with him doing his sentence in the US, and the years that he is been held should be subtracted from the sentence...what's that called? time served?

If ppl want to bring David Hicks back home, we should first consider other aussies first.
Harleyr
I remember last year when Mr Johnny Howard went over to Singapore to help that young lad to get of the death penalty for tafficing herion. What the difference here? If he got over here with the herion how many lifes do you think all that shiet would of destroyed?? Remeber not just the user but his or her family and friends, the people they rob and beat etc... It would of been in the thousands but Mr Johnny Howard tried to help him and good on him that was good. But its because he wants to and not scared to stand up to alot of Asian countrys laws. Why cant or will he do the same with David?? Cause he licks Bush's ass and where the country getting stood over.

Maybe the "coalition" should put money together and build a neutral prision and have a mixed panel of judges from the coaltion countrys and try people like David Hicks. Dont treat him as Australian or American like he is going to be tried in America but as a neutral person. Then these people can all be treated the same and no special treatment
