oh whats the difference?
Putting on weight is easy to do. Just eat non-stop crap and it'll happen except that's just loaded with very unhealthy fats.
Putting on mass is much more difficult. Because your body has a high metabolism you're dietary needs will have to consist of (using mine as an example): 60% carbs, 30% protein and 10% good fats. So you might want to consider consuming the following foods:
CarbsCruciferous (green) vegetables - brocoli, spinach, brussel sprouts,
Legumes - any sort of bean especially lentils, peas and beans
Brown/wholemeal/organic - rice, *pasta (not too much)
Whole Fruits - eaten raw
Nuts and Seeds - best ones are walnuts and almonds because they contain good dietary fats. Peanuts are the worst ones to eat as they contain bad fats.
Normal vegetables - carrots, cauliflower, corn (not too much of this cause they contain natural sugars that help increase the thermic/metabolism process)
Any soy product. Best source of carbs there are.
Oats - I eat this every morning for breakfast with some honey and skimmilk. This contains plenty of carbs to keep you full for the morning.
Dairy - cottage cheese, low fat cheeses, greek yoghurt but some normal yoghurts are nice and ok, skim milk (don't go for no fat coz you need the carbs remember)
ProteinPoultry - best ones are chicken and turkey skinless and from the breast. They're the best cuts
Red meats - it's wise to only have about 3 servings of this weekly max and with the fat trimmed. Best meat for this is kangaroo meat but if thats not your taste then a scothch fillet steak is good.
Seafood - the best is canned tuna and salmon in spring water or fresh from the Central Markets in pieces that you can steam to eat or eat sashimi (raw) style for maximum protein efficiency. Canned tuna is better for when you're on the go. I eat 7 of these a day. Other seafoods are great but can be really expensive.
Good fatsMonounsaturated oils - can be found in nut, canola and olive oils .
Polyunsaturated fats - Seafood like tuna, salmon and fish oil, as well as corn, soy, safflower and sunflower oils are high in polyunsaturated fats. Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids belong to this group.
The alternative is to take flaxseed capsule or fish oil caps for maximum benefit if you dont eat enough fish or seeds/nuts.
1. As a general rule of thumb - try not to overcook your foods as to keep them to there natural contant which is full of vitamins and protein (the only exception to this is poultry which must be cooked all the way through).
2. PORTION CONTROL. Try and have 5 to 7 small meals each day. What's small?? Think of your meat servings about the size of your hand. Your veggies to about a handful. Brown rice to about half a serving bowl full. Dairy products to one serving but if its cheese...about the size of 7 dices max.
3. Slow down when eating and take smaller bites. This will make you feel fuller.
4. Keep extra cans of tuna, fruit or celery/carrot sticks in a bag or lunch box just in case you feel like a bite or a snack.
5. Normally when you're feeling hungry; it also means that your body is craving fluids like water.
6. You're meals don't have to be bland. If you make a salad...don't go straight for the salad dressing. Make your own just using balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Perfect, healthy and it tastes fricken great. Marinate your meats with anything but make sure to cook it in the good oils.
And tie this in with a weights program and your set. Make sure you start with the basics such as the Flat Bench press, squats, tricep dips, barbell curl or dumbell curl.
Get your body used to these movements for at least 3 months before adding new movements to your routine.
Downplay your cardiovascular routine to just 1 once a week (this includes cranking it hard).
Also remember to get your heart rate going with a short warm up before each excercise and to stretch each muscle thoroughly.
Rest a maximum of 1 minute between sets.
Give your body ample rest between excercise days. So maybe try 4 on and 3 off. Example:
Week 1Monday: Chest
Tuesday: Off
Wednesday: Back
Thursday: Off
Friday: Arms
Saturday: Off
Sunday: Abs & Obliques
Week 2Monday: Off
Tuesday: Chest
Wednesday: Off
Thursday: Back
Friday: Off
Saturday: Abs & Obliques
Sunday: Off
This cycle should continue for at least eight weeks. You should see some results in your 4th week such as strength gains. By your eighth week you should see some mass being put on and kilos of muscle gained as well.
Hope this helps.
